Havre High girls continue to roll, crushing Harlem Wildcats

After a successful opening weekend to the high school basketball season, the Havre High girls basketball team continued to roll Thursday night with an 86-54 hammering of the District 2B Harlem Wildcats in Harlem.

If there was any indication of who was the dominant basketball team on the floor, it came in the first half as the Blue Ponies steamrolled to a 58-21 lead over the struggling Wildcats. Havre started the game off by outscoring Harlem 30-13 in the first period.

The Ponies were able to jump all over Harlem as a result of 21 first-half Wildcat turnovers, according to HHS head coach Dennis Murphy.

"Once again I was very pleased with our effort in the first half," Murphy said. "The girls played really hard and our intensity level was very high, especially on the defensive end of the floor.

"We were able to force Harlem into a lot of turnovers in the first half and that enabled us to get our transition game going and get some easy baskets. The game was really out of reach at halftime."

The second half saw the Wildcats try to rally some as Harlem played Havre to a 28-24 second half. But it was a case of too little, too late, as the Ponies closed the Wildcats out to up their record to 3-0 on the season.

"The thing I liked most was that our effort was very good and we are playing very well as a team right now," Murphy said. "On offense, we moved the ball around and we were able to find the open man and those kids took good shots.

"Amy McLain had another really good performance just taking care of the basketball and making good decisions," Murphy added. "She is playing really well right now."

As a result of the blowout win, Murphy was able to get all of his players into the scoring column Thursday night. Senior Jolene Fuzesy led all scorers with 23 points in limited action. Steph Flatau chipped in with 14 points and Alexa Lipp added a career-high 15 points as well. McLain added 10 points while Rebecca Hilliard also had eight points off the bench.

Harlem was paced by the duo of Alicia Shields and Kayla Horn, who scored 14 points each for the Wildcats.

The Ponies will be back in action tonight as they play for the first time this season at the Havre High gymnasium. Havre will welcome the Chinook Sugarbeeters and game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The game can be
