Big Sandy remains undefeated, Thunderbirds rolling with two wins

The weekend marked the end of high school basketball in 2003. Following last weekend's contests, teams will have nearly two weeks of rest before resuming their schedules after the new year.

Thursday night in District 2B action the Chinook Sugarbeeters weren't able to find that elusive first win of the season as they were routed by the Malta Mustangs, 62-49.

The Beeters trailed by just one point after the first period of play, but the Mustangs went on an 18-10 run in the second quarter to open a halftime lead of 31-22. Chinook could never close that gap in the second half.

Adam Hayes led the Beeters with 11 points and Kelan Broadhead added 10 in the losing effort. Marcus Birky also chipped in with nine points. Malta got a game-high 17 points from John Galt.

The Box Elder Bears were also victorious on Thursday night as they pulled out a 71-60 win over Dodson.

The Bears added to a three-point first quarter lead by scoring 24 points in the second period. Dodson could not recover from the 13-point halftime deficit despite outscoring Box Elder 35-33 in the second half.

Tim Rosette led three Bears in double figures with a game-high 21 points. James Burns had 16 points and Neal Rosette chipped in with 14 points in the win.

Thursday night was not as kind to the Chester Coyotes as they fell by three points to the Dutton-Brady Diamondbacks, 71-68.

The Diamondbacks raced out to a 23-17 lead after the first quarter and they held a 38-30 lead at intermission. The Coyotes trailed 52-40 heading into the fourth quarter, but rallied to outscore the D-Backs 28-19 in the game's final period, only to come short in the game's final minute.

Jon Tranberg led the Coyotes with 22 points and Travis VanDyke added 21. Colby Bliss led Dutton-Brady with a game-high 26 points and Matt Tranmer chipped in with 20.

On Friday night, Box Elder continued to roll with a convincing win over District 9C rival Rocky Boy, 96-41. The Bears outscored the Stars 42-19 in the first half and closed the Stars out with a 32-5 run in the fourth quarter.

Tim Rosette led six Bears in double figures with 22 points. James Burns scored 18 points while Dane Healey and Aaron Henry added 14 points apiece. Rocky Boy was paced by Kyle Windy Boy's 13 points. Ivan and Upton Whitford added 10 points apiece in the losing cause.

The KG KouGars also picked up a District 9C win on Friday night by routing the Blue Sky Eagles, 52-27. The difference in the contest was the third quarter, in which the KouGars limited Blue Sky to just two points.

Luke Antonich scored a game-high 18 points and Cody Donoven chipped with 17 points for the KouGars. Jeremiah Moog and Conrad Wendland scored eight points apiece for the Eagles.

The Big Sandy Pioneers finished 2003 off on an undefeated note Friday night as they crushed District 10C foe Joplin-Inverness, 82-48.

Jay Jamieson scored a game-high 28 points for the Pioneers while Gage Brumwell and Mason Ophus chipped in with 22 and 16 points, respectively. The Rams were led by Zach Ramberg with 21 points and Craig Miller with 17.

Friday night also saw Hays-Lodge Pole and Turner grab convincing wins. The Thunderbirds got 19 points from Robyn Doney en route to a 102-72 win over Roy.

The Turner Tornadoes knocked off the Harlem junior varsity team 59-46. Brandon Simons scored a game-high 29 points and Clancy Kegel added 17 in the win. Harlem got 14 points from Walter Crantz and 10 from Vance Bigby.

On Saturday night, Chinook's tough season continued as they were drilled by District 2B rival Harlem, 90-47.

Harlem jumped all over the Beeters 25-5 in the first quarter and never looked back en route to the easy conference victory.

Ben Carrywater and Jim Kennedy led five Wildcats in double figures with 19 points apiece. John Young added 15 points while Brian Azure and Lance Iron Child chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Chinook was paced by Kelan Broadhead with 11 points, and Marcus Birky added 10.

The Chester Coyotes also dropped their second District 10C game in three days as they fell to the Heart Butte Warriors 93-82. Heart Butte raced out to a 31-17 lead after the first quarter, and despite closing the gap to eight or nine points throughout the contest, the Coyotes could not overcome the early deficit.

Chester was led by John Tranberg with 33 points while Mitch Violett added 14 points. E.J. Aimsback scored a game-high 35 points for the Warriors.

The J-I Rams rebounded from their loss to Big Sandy Friday night by picking up a critical 63-47 win over 9C rival Blue Sky on Saturdy.

Clinging to a 17-16 lead at halftime, the Rams put the Eagles away by outscoring Blue Sky 46-31 in the second half. J-I got a game-high 23 points from Zach Ramberg and Craig Miller poured in 21 points. Conrad Wendland and Jeremiah Moog led the Eagles with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

The KG KouGars grabbed their second win in as many days, downing the Sunburst Refiners 56-43 Saturday night. KG was sparked by a 16-6 run in the second quarter and the Refiners could not recover in the second half. KG got a balanced effort with four players in double figures led by Richie Melby and Luke Antonich with 12 points apiece. Drew Kapperud and Cody Donoven chipped in with 10 points each.

The Turner Tornadoes also closed out 2003 on a winning note, by beating the Rocky Boy Stars 66-43. Turner's defense proved to be too much for the Stars as it held Rocky Boy to just 13 points in the first half while scoring 35 points their own.

Turner was led by 19 points from Brandon Simons and 18 from Evan Hauge. Clancy Kegel chipped in with 15 points. The Stars were led by the 12 points from Kyle Windy Boy.

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds also headed into Christmas break on a winning note as they picked up a 76-64 decision over the Whitewater Penguins Saturday night.

Delaine Ariwite led four T-Birds in double figures with 16 points while Dwight Flansburg added 15. Mike Gray had 13 points for the T-Birds and Robyn Doney added 12.
