Blue Sky moves atop 9C with win over KG, Rocky Boy picks up a pair of wins

The Blue Sky girls basketball team cemented itself atop the District 9C standing with a pair of wins this weekend, including a come-from-behind win over rival KG on Friday night.

The Eagles shook off a career scoring night from KG senior Cady Arifin and overcame a third-quarter deficit to pick up a 66-56 win in Gildford.

Arifin scored a game-high 30 points, including five three-pointers as the KouGars led by as much as 10 points during the contest. However, Blue Sky's defense tightened in the fourth quarter, limiting KG to a paltry 4 points, while scoring 19 points to rally for the win. The duo of junior Kaila Warren and senior Lindsay Anderson took over the fourth quarter, scoring all 19 of Blue Sky's points to lead the Eagles to a win.

Warren finished with 19 points and Anderson added 18. Senior Holly Haas also had a solid game with 11 points.

Besides Arifin, Whitney Hanson finished in double figures for KG with 12 points.

Blue Sky added a second win on the weekend with a 43-23 win over J-I to improve to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in 9C play.

The Eagles broke open a 9-3 first quarter by outscoring J-I 15-7 in the second quarter to pull away.

Warren led all scorers with 18 points while Anderson chipped in with nine. J-I was led by freshman Hannah Pimley with 13 points.

KG's tough luck continued with 60-52 loss at Sunburst. The Refiners jumped out to an early 18-9 lead and never looked back to hand KG its second loss of the season. The duo of Rachel Kleinert and Kendra Hovland scored 44 points to lead Sunburst. KG, which fell to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in 9C play, was led by Arifin's 17 points. Hanson added 12 while Britta Umbach chipped in with 10 for KG.

It was also a very good weekend for the Rocky Boy Morning Stars. Rocky Boy got 44 points from the Belcourt twins, Loni and Tori, to grab a 69-64 win over rival Box Elder in Box Elder on Friday.

The Morning Stars grabbed an 18-9 lead and weathered a fierce Box Elder rally to pick up its second conference win of the year. Box Elder placed four players in double figures led by Codi Raining Bird's 18 points. Tasha Parisian added 15 points while Shaneen Raining Bird and Loni Lamere added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Rocky Boy grabbed its second win with a 56-34 win in Turner. The Morning Stars jumped out to a 20-7 lead to cruise to the win over the Tornadoes.

Loni Belcourt scored a game-high 21 points while Marty Rae Stiffarm added 16. Turner was led by center Ashley Van Voast with 11 points.

In other 9C action, the Box Elder Bears were crushed on Thursday by Dodson, 105-56. Dodson outscored Box Elder 33-15 to start off the rout. Deserae KillEagle led five Dodson players in double figures with a game-high 33 points. Box Elder got a solid game from Shaneen Raining Bird with 29 points while Codi Raining Bird added 13.

The Big Sandy Pioneers picked up its second conference win with a 50-32 win over J-I Friday night in Joplin.

Ashley Goodian scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to help Big Sandy build an insurmountable lead. The Pioneers, 3-3 overall, also got 10 points from Mikki Hammons in the win. J-I, 2-4 after the weekend, got 11 points from senior Megan Herdina and 10 points from Pimley in the loss.

The Chester Coyotes picked up a split against a pair of 10C rivals. On Friday night, Chester fell 60-53 on the road at Dutton-Brady. The Coyotes held a 31-18 halftime lead, but the Cardinals rallied in the third quarter, outscoring Chester 18-10 to take control of the game. Chester was led by Mary DeVries with 18 points and seven rebounds. Courtney Fraser added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists while Shawnee Norick had 10 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

The Coyotes bounced back on Saturday with a convincing 67-35 road win in Heart Butte. The Coyotes raced to a 28-12 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Chester was paced by Keyla Wendland's game-high 34 points, including five three-pointers. DeVries added 11 points and 11 rebounds while Shawnee Norick had a solid game inside with nine points and 14 rebounds. Courtney Fraser had seven assists in the win.

In District 2B action, the Chinook Sugarbeeters dropped a 54-53 heartbreaker to Malta on Friday night. The Mustangs grabbed an early first-half lead and staved off countless Sugarbeeter rallies. Roshon Nordlund scored 22 points and Kelly Pankratz added 18 to pace Malta. Chinook got 15 points from Whitney Lybeck and 13 from Kelsey Crampton in the loss.

The Beeters bounced back with a 74-43 pasting of Harlem in Chinook on Saturday. The Beeters jumped 20-10 first quarter lead to cruise to the easy win.

Georgia Barber came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points while Crampton added 15 in the win. Kayla Erskine and Tiffany Cuerth chipped in with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Harlem was led by Olivia Main's game-high 21 points in the loss.

The Wildcats also suffered a 51-20 loss to Glasgow on Friday night. Only three Wildcat players reached the scoring column, led by Main's 11 points.
