Big Sandy remains undefeated, KG, Box Elder notch key wins

After a two-week layoff for Christmas break, the Hi-Line has come alive once again with basketball. Friday and Saturday night saw all of District 2B, District 9C and 10C return to action

On Friday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters' tough season continued as they were soundly defeated by conference leading Glasgow, 69-43. The first and third quarters proved to be the Beeters' undoing as Chinook surrendered 24 points in each period to the Scotties. In those two combined periods Glasgow outscored Chinook 48-22.

Dillon Davies led the Beeters in scoring with 10 points and Adam Hayes added nine in the losing effort. Glen Bratz led all scorers with 14 for the Scotties.

The Harlem Wildcats also dropped a critical 2B showdown on Friday night to Plentywood, 62-53. Harlem held a 35-31 lead at halftime, but Plentywood turned the tide in the third quarter by outscoring Harlem 15-7 in the third quarter.

Ben Carrywater led all scorers with 21 points for Harlem and Jim Kennedy added 14 points. Shane Ziedler paced Plentywood with 20 points.

In District 9C action Friday night, the No. 1 ranked Big Sandy Pioneers continued their march toward an undefeated season by routing Rocky Boy 75-53.

Jay Jamieson scored a game-high 31 points for Big Sandy and Gage Brumwell chipped in with 15 points. A.J. The Boy and Eric Watson scored 12 points apiece to lead Rocky Boy in the loss.

The Turner Tornadoes picked up a key conference win on Friday night at home by routing Hays-Lodge Pole, 83-64. The game featured several lead changes starting off with the T-Birds racing out to a 21-12 lead. The Tornadoes responded by outscoring the T-Birds 28-15 in the second quarter to trail 36-30 at the half. Turner took control of the contest by outscoring Hays-Lodge Pole 43-28 in the second half en route to the win.

Brandon Simons paced the Tornadoes with a game-high 33 points and Evan Hauge added 20 points. The T-Birds got 14 points from Dwight Flansburg while Joe Small and Delaine Ariwite added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Box Elder Bears also earned a 9C win on Friday in Rudyard, with a 61-38 trouncing of host Blue Sky.

The Bears were paced by Tim Rosette and James Burns with 13 points apiece. Neal Rosette chipped in with 11 points. Darius Wendland led the Eagles in the loss with 13 points and Jeremiah Moog added 11 points.

Meanwhile, the KG KouGars were able to edge District 10C foe Chester 49-48 at home on Friday night. The KouGars benefited from an early 19-11 lead and the contest turned into a defensive struggle from there, with the Coyotes climbing their way back in the game only to come up short in the game's final minute.

Cody Donoven paced the KouGars with 19 points and Drew Kapperud added 11. The Coyotes got 16 points from Travis VanDyke in the losing effort.

On Saturday night, the Harlem Wildcats stepped out of conference to host District 9C foe Rocky Boy. The Wildcats pasted the Stars 82-37. The Stars kept the game close after one quarter, trailing 16-13, but the Wildcats put the defensive clamps down in the second period on their way to outscoring the Stars 25-2 to close out the half.

John Young scored a game-high 25 points, including five three-pointers and Jim Kennedy added 20 points. Ben Carrywater scored 17 points and Brian Azure added 12 in the win. The Stars got seven points from the trio of Matry Watson, Garrett Demontiney and Upton Whitford in the loss.

In 9C action Saturday night, the KG KouGars captured their second straight conference win by knocking off Turner 40-35 in Gildford. The game was a close-knit affair with KG clinging to a 14-12 halftime lead. The KouGars turned away Turner's attempts to overtake the lead in the fourth quarter.

Cody Donoven led the KouGars with 14 points, while Clancy Kegel scored 14 points and Brandon Simons added 10 in the losing effort for Turner.

The Big Sandy Pioneers continued to roll, routing the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds 100-65 behind a 42-point outburst from Gage Brumwell. Mason Ophus and Jay Jamieson also had huge efforts for the Pioneers scoring 27 and 26 points, respectively. The T-Birds were led by 15 points apiece from Joe Blackelk and Michael Gray.

In Chester, the host Coyotes rebounded from their loss to KG on Friday night with a 94-39 pounding of Blue Sky. Mitch Violett led six Coyotes in double-figures with 18 points. Travis VanDyke, Patrick Walstad and Logan Lyders poured in 14 points apiece. The Eagles were led by Conrad Wendland's 15 points.

Saturday night also was unkind to the J-I Rams as they dropped a 60-45 decision to the Valier Panthers. Valier took advantage of a 16-5 first-quarter run and never looked back en route to the conference win.

Craig Miller scored a game-high 31 points for J-I but he was one of only four players to reach the scoring column in the loss.

On a rare Monday night game, the Box Elder Bears rolled the Belt Huskies 73-54 in Belt. The Bears outscored Belt 24-11 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
