KG moves into second place in 9C with two wins; Chester wins two 10C games

After suffering a pair of disappointing losses a week ago, the KG KouGars rallied for a pair of conference wins to move back into second place in the District 9C race. The KouGars picked up hard-fought wins over Big Sandy and Rocky Boy to improve their record to 4-4 in conference.

Friday night, Cady Arifin scored 31 points and was unstoppable down the stretch as KG broke open a 36-35 game in the fourth quarter to pick up a 62-55 win. Arifin scored 15 of the KouGars 25 fourth quarter points, including several key buckets late in the game as KG pulled away.

Big Sandy tried to counter with the duo of Ashley Goodian and Naomi Williams, who combined for 12 points in the fourth quarter, but came up short. Williams finished with 20 points to lead the Pioneers. Goodian, who was hounded by KG defenders for much of the night, finished with 14 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

On Saturday, KG pulled a game ahead of Rocky Boy in the conference standings with a 56-44 win. K-G raced to a 20-3 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Arifin paced the KouGars with 24 points, while Casie Toner added 15 points in the win. Rocky Boy was led by Tori Belcourt's 12 points.

The Blue Sky Eagles remained atop the 9C, notching a pair of wins on the weekend. Thursday night, Blue Sky used a 24-5 third quarter to put away Turner 60-36. Lindsay Anderson scored 23 points and Kaila Warren added 16 in the win. Turner was paced by Ashley Van Voast's 16 points. The win came with a price, though, as Eagle starting point guard Holly Haas went down with a foot injury and is out indefinitely.

Blue Sky rounded out the weekend with a tough 61-55 win over Rocky Boy. The Eagles trailed 46-33 going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Morning Stars 28-9 to close out the game. Anderson finished with a game-high 20 points, while Warren pitched in with 15 for Blue Sky. Rocky Boy got 16 points from Tori Belcourt in the loss.

In other 9C action, Hays-Lodge Pole picked up another 9C win with a close 43-42 victory over Box Elder. Colette Hawley scored 17 points and Sheena Shambo added 11 in the win. Box Elder got 12 points from Gerri Eagleman in the loss. Saturday night wasn't as kind as the T-Birds were drubbed 57-23 by Dodson.

In District 10C action, Chester added two more wins on the weekend. The Coyotes cruised past J-I, 66-24, on Friday night. Chester got 16 points from Keyla Wendland and 14 from Shawnee Norick in the win. J-I was paced by Hannah Pimley's 13 points. The Coyotes grabbed another win on Saturday night, defeating Sunburst 68-42. Wendland led Chester with 15 points, while Alisha Fossen and Mary DeVries chipped in with 13 points apiece.

In District 2B, the Chinook Sugarbeeters split a pair of games with a 53-45 win over Poplar on Friday and a 61-52 loss to District 1B-foe Fort Benton on Saturday.

Georgia Barber scored 12 points off the bench and Whitney Lybeck added 10 against Poplar. Kelsey Crampton scored 18 points and Lybeck added 11 in the loss to Fort Benton.

The weekend wasn't kind to the Harlem Wildcats as they dropped two more conference games. Harlem managed just one point in the first half against the 2B-leading Wolves. The Wildcats offensive woes continue in a 61-39 loss to Malta on Saturday. Alicia Shields and Olivia Main scored 12 points each for Harlem.
