Pioneers remain undefeated; Hays-Lodge Pole, Rocky Boy score upsets

After another weekend of boys high school basketball across the Hi-Line, the Chinook Sugarbeeters were left still searching for their first win of the season and the top-ranked Big Sandy Pioneers got two serious tests from KG and Geraldine, but managed to keep their record unblemished on the year. District 9-C also saw upsets by Rocky Boy and Blue Sky shake up the standings over the weekend.

Thursday night, the Harlem Wildcats started their three-game weekend off with a 51-44 loss to the Glasgow Scotties in a critical District 2B contest. Ben Carrywater and Jim Kennedy scored 11 points apiece and John Young added 10 in the loss.

Thursday night also saw the steadily improving Turner Tornadoes hammer the Blue Sky Eagles 57-27 in Turner. The Tornadoes got a game-high 15 points from Evan Hauge, while Clancy Kegel and Brandon Simons chipped in with 14 and 10 points, respectively. The Eagles were paced by Jeremiah Moog's team-high nine points.

On Friday night, the No. 1 ranked Big Sandy Pioneers traveled to Gildford and outlasted a tenacious defensive affair with the KG KouGars, 54-49.

The two teams battled through a seesaw first half that saw the Pioneers clinging to a 25-24 lead. However, Drew Kapperud opened the second half with a three-pointer and Richie Melby followed that up with a jumper that gave the KouGars a 29-25 lead early in the second half.

The Pioneers answered with an 8-0 run that gave them a 33-29 lead with less than two minutes to play in the quarter. But the KouGars struck right back with a 9-0 run of their own as Melby drilled a shot at the buzzer that gave the KouGars a 40-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded baskets early in the final stanza, but Skylar Pearson drilled a wide-open three at 4:30 mark and then converted a steal into a layup. Gage Brumwell followed that with a short jumper of his own. That 7-0 spurt gave the Pioneers a five-point cushion at 50-45. KG could not connect on the three-pointer shots that had kept it close throughout the night as the Pioneers iced the contest at the free-throw line.

"KG played a really good game tonight," said Big Sandy head coach Roy Lackner. "They shot the ball really well for three quarters, but they didn't make a couple at the end of the game. If they had, they certainly could have won this game tonight because they played good enough to beat us tonight."

Big Sandy got a game-high 21 points from Jay Jamieson, while Pearson and Brumwell chipped in with 12 points apiece. The KouGars were paced by Melby's 15 points. Cody Donoven and Kapperud added 12 points each in the losing effort.

Big Sandy played without two key players in Adam Butler and Adam Jesperson. Butler is suffering from a dislocated shoulder and Jesperson is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered during the football season.

"Right now we're without those two key guys and it hurts us," Lackner said. "But we're still playing good basketball and hopefully we can get through this part of our schedule. This was a good win for us over KG. I like where this team is at right now. But we still have a lot of work to do and a lot of basketball left in the season."

In District 2B play Friday night, the Harlem Wildcats got back on the winning track with a 71-53 win at Wolf Point. Ben Carrywater led all scorers with 19 points. Jim Kennedy added 15 points and John Young chipped in with 11.

Meanwhile, the Chinook Sugarbeeters' woes this season continued as they suffered a 69-54 loss at the hands of the Poplar Indians. Chinook trailed by just six points at 36-30 at halftime, but a 17-7 third-quarter run by Poplar did the Beeters in.

Adam Hayes led the Beeters in the scoring column with 14 points and Jordan Lybeck added 12 points in the losing effort.

Friday night saw the Blue Sky Eagles pick up their first win of the season with a 54-50 victory over the Rocky Boy Stars in District 9C action.

Jeremiah Moog scored 19 points to lead the Eagles (1-9) in the win. Conrad Wendland chipped in with nine points. A.J. The Boy paced the Stars with 13 points in the losing effort.

Also in District 9C, in Hays on Friday night the host T-Birds upset the Box Elder Bears, 75-67. The Bears clung to a 43-40 lead at halftime, but the T-Birds blew past the Bears, outscoring them 20-11 in the final stanza.

Robyn Doney led four Hays-Lodge Pole players in double figures with 19 points and Joe Small chipped in with 14. Lance Brockie and Dwight Flansburg added 11 and 10 points, respectively. The Bears got a game-high 20 points from Tim Rosette in the loss.

In District 10C action, the J-I Rams earned an important conference win over district powerhouse Chester, 59-58. The Rams built a 33-17 halftime lead, but the Coyotes came all the way back by scoring 31 points in the fourth quarter, but still came up short.

Craig Miller scored 23 points for the Rams and Brent Pimley chipped in with 16. Travis VanDyke led all scorers with 24 points for the Coyotes.

On Saturday night, Harlem picked up its second win in as many days with a 69-42 thrashing of the Malta Mustangs. The Wildcats opened the contest on a 19-6 run and they used a 15-6 third quarter run to put Malta away.

Jim Kennedy scored a game-high 20 points, including four three-pointers, while Jordan Mount chipped in with 13 points in the win.

Also Saturday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters were held winless on the season as they were hammered by District 1B-foe Fort Benton, 52-31. The second quarter was the Beeters' undoing as the Longhorns held Chinook to just two points in the period.

Adam Hayes paced the Beeters in the loss with 11 points.

The Big Sandy Pioneers were again tested on Saturday night by a very good Geraldine team, but the Pioneers managed to pick up a 68-61 road victory to remain undefeated on the season.

Big Sandy (11-0) got a game-high 26 points from Gage Brumwell, while Jay Jamieson and Mason Ophus added 19 and 13 points in the win.

Saturday night also saw the Rocky Boy Stars upset the KG KouGars 60-49 in Rocky Boy. The Stars (2-8) got 13 points from Kyle Windy Boy in the win. Upton Whitford chipped in with 11 points. KG (6-4) was paced by Cody Donoven's 13 points, while Richie Melby added 12 points in the loss.

District 9C also saw a thriller in Box Elder as the host Bears edged the Turner Tornadoes, 68-67. Turner broke a 35-35 halftime tie by going on a 20-13 run in the third period to take a 55-48 lead. But the Bears battled back, outscoring the Tornadoes 20-12 in the final stanza to earn the one-point win.

Box Elder (8-2) had five players in double-figures led by Tim Rosette with 18 points. James Burns also chipped in with 14 in the win. Turner (6-4) got a game-high 22 points from Clancy Kegel to lead five Turner players in double-figures.

The Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds (7-3) routed Dodson at home Saturday night, 78-62. Delaine Ariwite led the T-Birds in scoring with 19 points and Robyn Doney and Joe Small added 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Saturday night saw the Chester Coyotes rebound from their loss to J-I, cruising past the Sunburst Refiners 80-52. John Tranberg led all scorers with 20 points in the win for the Coyotes.

Also in District 10C action, the Heart Butte Warriors downed the J-I Rams, 85-73. The Rams kept the contest close through three quarters, but the Warriors closed the contest out by outscoring J-I, 30-18 in the fourth quarter

The Rams got a game-high 35 points from Zach Ramberg. Craig Miller and Brent Pimley added 15 and 14 points each in the loss.
