Big Sandy wins showdown with Box Elder; Chinook gets first win

This past weekend in boys high school basketball on the Hi-Line saw the Chinook Sugarbeeters capture their first win of the season on Saturday against Cascade. In District 9C action, the Big Sandy Pioneers also continued to keep hold of the top spot in the state behind a 51-point performance from Jay Jamieson on Saturday night.

The weekend kicked off on Thursday night as the Chester Coyotes were pounded by District 1B for Fort Benton 84-68. The Longhorns built a 39-26 halftime lead and then held the Coyotes off in the fourth quarter despite surrendering 31 points in the final stanza.

Travis VanDyke led the way for the Coyotes with a game-high 23 points. Mitch Violett and Logan Lyders added 15 and 10 points, respectively.

The KG KouGars got back on the winning track Thursday night as they routed the J-I Rams, 56-35.

The Rams raced out to a 15-11 first quarter lead. But the KouGars outscored J-I 15-2 in the second quarter and 14-6 in the third to put the game out of reach.

Cody Donoven led the KouGars in the win with 17 points. Richie Melby added 12 points. Zach Ramberg and Craig Miller paced J-I with 10 points apiece.

The Rocky Boy Stars stepped out of District 9C play on Thursday night and were defeated by the Highwood Mountaineers, 52-45.

Ivan Whitford led the Stars in the loss with 15 points and A.J. The Boy added 13 points.

On Friday night, the marquee matchup in District 9C action saw the No. 1 ranked Big Sandy Pioneers defeat the host Box Elder Bears, 78-59. The Pioneers got a game-high 31 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks from Gage Brumwell, but it was Devin Genereux's season-high 21 points, including seven three-pointers that proved to be the difference.

With Box Elder trying to negate Big Sandy's size inside by packing the lane with a zone defense, Genereux made the Bears pay, continually knocking down big three-point shots.

"I felt pretty good during warmups," Genereux said. "After I made the first couple, I was feeling it."

It was the second-straight week in which an unheralded scorer came up big for Big Sandy. The week before, Skylar Pearson drained four crucial three-pointers in a win over KG.

"Let teams think that our wings can't shoot," said head coach Roy Lackner. "We were still missing another one of our key players in (Adam) Jesperson. (Devin) can shoot the three. He was a scorer on JV last year. He can shoot it when he wants, he just passes up too many open looks."

Box Elder led for much of the first half as the trio of Tim Rosette, Tyler Henry and Kyle Parker sparked the Bears. Rosette battled inside against the much taller Big Sandy posts for 16 points in the game. With point guard Neal Rosette saddled with foul trouble for much of the game, Parker and Henry scored 15 and 14 points, respectively with each knocking down several key three-pointers to keep Box Elder close.

Jay Jamieson chipped in with 14 points, while Mason Ophus added 13 rebound and Pearson had nine assists in the win for Big Sandy.

"Give Box Elder credit," Lackner said. "They shot the lights out in the first half and really hustled to get some loose balls. They have a good shooting team, but I didn't think they could keep it going in the second half. We stepped up, made some outside shots and it opened it up for Brumwell in the middle."

The Turner Tornadoes also picked up a win on Friday night as they downed Dodson, 63-47. Turner broke a 10-10 first-quarter tie by going on an 18-4 run in the second period. The Tornadoes then outscored Dodson 35-33 in the second half to seal the victory.

Turner was led by Brandon Simons game-high 27 points. Clancy Kegel added 12 points in the win.

Also on Friday night, the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds earned a hard-fought 61-54 win over District 7C foe Grass Range. The T-Birds were led in the victory by Delaine Ariwite's game-high 19 points. Lance Brockie added 13 points.

Friday night was not as kind to the Blue Sky Eagles. The Eagles dropped a 45-39 decision to the Sunburst Refiners. The Eagles were down by only one point at halftime, but the Refiners held them to just one point in the third period to put the game out of reach.

The Eagles were led by Jeremiah Moog with 15 points in the losing effort.

In District 10C action, the J-I Rams were hammered by the Dutton-Brady Diamondbacks, 98-53. The Rams kept the contest close in the first half, trailing 31-33. But the D-Backs quickly put the game out of reach in the third quarter by going on a 35-8 run. In all, the D-Backs outscored J-I 65-22 in the second half to cruise to the easy win.

The Rams were paced by Craig Miller's team-high 22 points. Zach Ramberg added nine points. Colby Bliss scored a game-high 34 points, including five three-pointers for the Diamondbacks.

On Saturday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters were able to get into the win column for the first time this season. The Beeters defeated District 1B rival Cascade, 53-41. The contest was close through three quarters. The two teams played to a 31-31 tie at the halftime and the Beeters held a 43-42 lead at the end of the third quarter. Chinook then used a 20-9 run in the final stanza to finally put the Badgers away.

The Beeters got a balanced scoring attack led by Jordan Lybeck's 10 points. Chad Beck added nine points and Marty Birky and Dillon Davies chipped in with eight points apiece.

In District 9C action Saturday night, the KG KouGars picked up a critical win over the Box Elder Bears, 59-46. The KouGars jumped out to a 31-23 lead at halftime and then held off the Bears in the second half.

KG, 8-4 overall and 7-3 in the 9C, got 14 points apiece from Brandon Melby and Cody Donoven. Richie Melby also added 13 points. The Bears, who dropped to 8-4 overall and 6-4 in conference, were led by Tim Rosette with 14 points and Aaron Henry with 13.

The Rocky Boy Stars earned an upset victory for the second time in as many weeks on Saturday night. The Stars downed the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds, 63-58. The Stars clung to a 48-39 lead after three quarters and then held the T-Birds off in the final period.

Rocky Boy, 3-9 overall and 3-8 in conference, was paced by A.J. The Boy's game-high 23 points. Ivan Whitford added 11 points. The T-Birds (8-4, 7-3) got 14 points from Delaine Ariwite and 13 from Lance Brockie. Dwight Flansburg added 11 points in the loss.

Top-ranked Big Sandy (13-0, 11-0) had an easy time Saturday night with struggling Blue Sky. The Pioneers crushed the Eagles, 100-57. But the story of the night was Big Sandy senior Jay Jamieson.

Jamieson poured in 51 points, including six three-pointers. Gage Brumwell added 26 points in the route. The Eagles (1-11, 1-9) got 11 points apiece from Jeremiah Moog and Levi Wendland. Conrad Wendland added 10 points.

The Turner Tornadoes fell to District 3C foe Whitewater on Saturday night, 56-48. The Penguins erased a 16-9 first quarter deficit and held Turner off in the second half.

Turner (7-5, 6-5) was led by Clancy Kegel's game-high 24 points. Dalton Cornell chipped in with 12 points in the loss.

In District 10C action Saturday night, the Chester Coyotes and J-I Rams both bounced back from losses earlier in the week.

The Coyotes earned a 75-53 win over the Valier Panthers behind 18 points from Travis VanDyke and 16 from Logan Lyders. Mitch Violett added 14 points and Patrick Walstad chipped in with 10.

Meanwhile, the J-I Rams rebounded from Friday's blowout loss to Dutton-Brady by hammering Sunburst, 64-48. The Rams trailed the Refiners 29-24 at halftime. But a 15-9 run in the third quarter allowed J-I to pull ahead of the Refiners, and a 25-point outburst in the fourth quarter put the game out of reach.

The Rams were paced by Zach Ramberg's game-high 19 points. J-I also got 17 points from Brent Pimley and 14 from Craig Miller in the win.
