Pony swim teams sweep team titles at Class A meet in Hardin

If there was any doubt whether the Havre High swim teams were poised for another run at their fifth consecutive Class A state titles, they were erased this past weekend in Hardin.

The Ponies captured both team titles to serve notice that the state titles are theirs until someone comes in and takes it from them. The Pony girls put on a dominant showing, scoring 248 team points, leaving Hardin, which finished second with 98 points, securely in their wake.

Havre captured all but two individual events and swept the relays en route to the dominant performance.

The duo of Rachel Hansen and Kasie Teske dominated the freestyle events to pace the Ponies. Hansen captured the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Teske won the 200 freestyle and finished in the second in the 100 butterfly. Other event winners for Havre were Gwen Porter in the 200 IM, Katie Hartman in the 100 butterfly and Danielle Barton in the 100 backstroke.

The team of Barton, Porter, Teske and Hansen easily captured the 200 medley relay by more than 15 seconds to its nearest competitor. Havre teams also finished third, fourth and fifth in the even. Barton, Porter, Teske and Hansen teamed up again to win the 200 freestyle relay while the team of Kristin Evanson, Katie Hartman, Emily Kostelecky and Laura Lovo finished in second place. Havre also had teams finish fourth and sixth in the 200 free relay.

Things were a little tighter on the boys side as Havre edged Hardin 155-154 for the boys team title. Havre had only one individual winner - Scott Robinson in the 50 freestyle - but managed to still place enough swimmers to accumulate the winning team points.

Matt Hartman, Scott Vigliotti and Bryden Vukasin scored important points with a second, third, fourth place finish in the 200 IM. Vigliotti added a second in 500 freestyle while Ryan Kinholt added a solid third-place finish in the 100 backstroke.

The relay team of Jordan Croft, Kevin Friede, Sam Simpson and Scott Robinson finished second in the 400 freestyle relay and third in the 200 relay while Kinholt, Vukasin, Hartman and Jordan Magelssen teamed to finish third in the 200 medley relay.

With the Class A state meet less than two weeks away, the Ponies will have one last chance to acquire state qualifying times on Saturday when they travel to Helena.

The Class A state meet is on Feb. 6-7 in Great Falls.
