Chester moves to top of District 10C

With the conference season moving past the halfway point, several girls high school basketball teams on the Hi-Line used this past weekend to move up in the standings as the ever-important district tournaments approach.

The Chester Coyotes had perhaps the biggest weekend of any team in the area. The Coyotes scored a pair of wins to move into first place in the District 10C standings. Chester knocked off rival and conference leader Dutton-Brady on Friday night in Chester, 79-67. The Coyotes rolled to a 22-13 first quarter lead and never looked back, holding off a furious second-half Dutton-Brady rally.

Sophomore Mary DeVries led five Chester players in double figures with 19 points. Senior Alisha Fossen had her best game since returning from injury with 16 points while fellow senior Courtney Fraser added 14. Keyla Wendland and Shawnee Norick added 13 and 12, respectively.

The Coyotes made it a clean sweep of the weekend with a 63-34 win over Heart Butte in Chester. The Coyotes started off slowly, trailing 31-26 in the first half. Chester rallied in the second half, holding Heart Butte to 13 points, while scoring 37 points to pull away.

DeVries poured in 28 points for Chester while Wendland and Norick added nine points each.

The Blue Sky Eagles received a bit of a scare on Saturday night as they edged the J-I Rams 48-42 in Joplin. Lindsay Anderson scored 18 points to lead the Eagles while Robyn Schnitzmeier chipped in with 10 points. The Rams were led by freshman Hannah Pimley's 19 points. Blue Sky is still in firm control atop the 9C standings with an 11-1 conference record and a 12-2 overall record.

The Rocky Boy Morning Stars continued to march toward the top of the 9C standings. The Morning Stars scored a pair of wins this weekend, starting with a 66-45 win over rival Box Elder in Rocky Boy.

The Morning Stars rallied from a 29-28 halftime deficit to outscore the Bears 38-16 in the second half to pick up the win.
