Make it five in a row for Pony girls

If there was any doubt as to whether the Havre High girls swim team would win its fifth straight Class A state swimming title, it was erased immediately.

The Pony girls cruised to yet another state title at this past weekend's All-Class State Swim meet in Great Falls, besting rival Hardin 39-2.

Havre ended all uncertainty during Friday's preliminary round, qualifying all three of its relays for Saturday's finals/consolation finals round along with two individuals to secure the title.

"It wasn't very close," said head coach Chris Inman. "The girls put the pressure on right away and kind of ran away with it."

Havre was led by the 200 medley relay team of senior Daniel Barton, senior Gwen Porter, senior Kasie Teske and junior Rachel Hansen. The squad made it to the finals, placing sixth with a time of 2:05.98.

The same foursome came up just short in its bid to make the finals in the 200 freestyle relay. Instead, they had to settle for winning the consolation finals with a time of 1:49.32 and finishing seventh.

"They really wanted to get both relays in the finals, but we gladly took the one," Inman said. "Those girls swam so hard. Last year we swim 1:51 in the free relay and place fifth. This year we swim a 1:49 and finish seventh. It was just a tough race this year."

Havre's 400 freestyle relay also made it to the consolation finals with a time of 4:11.13.

With the team title firmly secured, a few of the underclassmen on the squad stepped down to allow some seniors swim in what would be their final race of their career. Seniors Brittne Zimmer, Steph Mariani, Katie Hartman and junior Emily Kostelecky combined to finish 12th.

Individually, the Havre girls had two swimmers reach Saturday as Teske and Hansen finished 11th and 12th, respectively in the 50 freestyle, while Hansen added an 11th-place finish in the 100 freestyle.

"Our girls swam really well," Inman said. "It's always good to have anyone finish in the top 12. But I think the thing I was pleased most with was how our girls carried themselves this weekend. They won with class. You know it would be easy to be arrogant or cocky, but they were very humble."

Havre will say goodbye to nine senior swimmers including, Teske, Porter, Barton, Hartman, Zimmer, Mariani, Kelsey Smith and Rylee O'Connell.

Unfortunately, the Havre High boys were humbled with a third-place finishing ending their four-year run as state swimming champs.

The boys scored 31 team points, finishing behind champion Billings Central (62) and Hardin (44).

The Pony boys lack of depth came back to haunt them as Billings Central rode its 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams to the team title.

Havre put up a valiant fight as senior Scott Robinson finished a solid third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle to lead the Ponies.

"Scott swam really, really well," Inman said. "He's just a great team leader and he does it in a very quiet way. I can't say enought about him."

Robinson, along with Kevin Friede, Bryden Vukasin and Sam Simpson, teamed up to finish 11th in the 200 medley relay.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Friede, Simpson, Robinson and Jordan Croft also finished 11th. However, Havre did not place with its 400 freestyle relay team after it suffered a disqualification in the consolation finals.

Despite seeing the title run end, Inman was very proud of her boys squad.

"No matter what the score says, the boys swam out of their minds," Inman said. "We had kids taking off four and five seconds on their times. That might not have got them to Saturday, but it's still a big improvement."

Perhaps the biggest excitement that Inman got this weekend was watching the reaction of her younger swimmers to their first state meet.

"It was great to see their excitement," she said. "They can't wait to get back here next year."

And Inman believes her team will be back and be back on top, especially since the boys return every swimmer from this year and the girls squad seems to keep reloading.

"We'll be back," Inman said. "The boys have everyone coming back and even though we lose some great seniors on the girls we have some good young swimmer coming and some others waiting in the wings. We'll definitely be back because all these kids that were at state finally can see how much work and what it takes to be champions."
