Cut Bank ends Wildcats' season at North-East B

For the first time in four years, the Harlem Wildcats boys basketball team won't be a part of the Class B state basketball tournament. The Wildcats rebounded from an opening-round loss to Fairfield on Thursday to reach the consolation game before falling to Cut Bank, 73-52, at the North-East B divisional basketball tournament in Malta.

The Wildcats raced out to an early 16-14 lead on the defending state champion Cut Bank Wolves Saturday night. But Cut Bank quickly erased the deficit by going on a 19-10 run in the second quarter to take a 33-26 lead. The Wolves continued to pour it on in the the third quarter via a 17-6 run. Harlem rallied in the fourth quarter but could never really get back into the contest.

John Young scored 21 points for the Wildcats and Jim Kennedy added 16 points in the losing effort. Both players drilled three three-pointers in the contest. Chad Larson scored a game-high 29 points for Cut Bank and Keithan Gregg added 23 points.

The Wildcats' road to the consolation game was made very difficult because of 65-62 loss to Fairfield in the first round on Thursday afternoon. Fairfield jumped all over the Wildcats in the first half as they led 33-23 at intermission. Harlem rallied to score 20 points in the fourth quarter, but came up just short in the game's final minutes.

Young led all Wildcats in the scoring column with 17 points. Kennedy chipped in with 12 points and Ben Carrywater added 10 point in the loss.

On Friday, Harlem was able to rebound from the first-round loss by knocking off 2B foe Plentywood, 56-40. Harlem put together a 17-4 run in the second quarter and Plentywood never recovered.

Kennedy led the way for the Wildcats with 15 points and Carrywater added 12 points.

Saturday morning, Harlem continued to climb back into the tournament with a 76-36 thumping of Fort Benton. Harlem got off to a very fast start, outscored the Longhorns 25-7 in the first quarter and never looked back. Young once again led the way for Harlem with a game-high 19 points. Kennedy and Jordan Mount added 15 points apiece.

Saturday night's loss to Cut Bank means that Harlem's season ends with a 17-8 overall record.
