Brumwell signs with Carroll College

Big Sandy High School senior standout Gage Brumwell recently announced that he has signed an NAIA national letter of intent to join the Carroll College basketball team starting in the fall of 2004.

The 6-6 Brumwell is coming off of a phenomenal senior season in which he led the Pioneers to a 25-1 season as well as District 9C and Northern C divisional championships.

The Pioneers wound up finishing second at the Class C state tournament in Billings, losing to Brockton 66-64 in the championship game.

Brumwell also quarterbacked the Big Sandy football team to a perfect 8-0 regular season and a Northern C conference championship. The Pioneers fell in the Class C state championship game to Drummond.

As for signing with Carroll College, Brumwell cites the school's reputation as a prestigious academic institution as his top reason for choosing the move to Helena.

"First off, Carroll is just such a great school," Brumwell said. "That is something that is really important to me.

"I also really liked the players they already have and the coaching staff," Brumwell added. "The style of play was also a factor. They use their post players a lot more than a lot of college basketball teams do, so it seemed like it would be a good fit for me."

Athletics and academics are two things that are synonymous with Brumwell's high school achievements. He has played football and basketball all four years and has also competed in track and field. In 2004, he was named all-conference and all-state in football and he is a three-time all-conference basketball player and has earned all-state honors twice in hoops. Brumwell also earned the Montana Wendy's Heisman award in 2003.

Off of the playing fields, Brumwell is a 3.9 student at Big Sandy High School as well as a member of the National Honor Society and Academic All-State. Brumwell has also participated in band and choir during his high school career and is involved in several activities in the community of Big Sandy.

But choosing Carroll, did not come easy for Brumwell. He narrowed his choice of schools down to Carroll, Rocky Mountain College and Idaho State before deciding to join the Fighting Saints.

"In the end, Carroll just seemed to fit me best," Brumwell said. "The school and all of their athletic programs are great. They have great coaches and great facilities."

Brumwell intends on majoring in Pharmacy at Carroll College.
