HHS track splits dual with CMR

The Havre High girls track team captured 10 events en route to a dominant 87-58 win over C.M. Russell High School in dual track meet action Tuesday at Memorial Stadium in Great Falls.

Carmen Neuens, Lena Suek Kelsey Smith and Alicia Overcast all won two events to pace the Pony girls.

Neuens and Suek, both steadily improving freshman, showed flashes of their potential. Neuens won the long ups with a leap of 14-0 and the high jump with a jump of 5-10. Suek, who has been Havre's most consistent thrower of the season, won the discus with a toss of 116-7 and the javelin with a throw of 112-0.

Smith and Overcast, who were expected at the beginning of the season to score points as seniors, showed why on Tuesday. Smith won the 200, edging out teammate Mandi Nystrom, and captured the pole vault with a mark of 9-6.

Overcast, who was making her first appearance in a meet this season, won the 100-meter dash, edging out Smith and Rylee O'Connell. She also won the 300 hurdles with ease, beating her nearest opponent by almost 10 seconds.

Other event winners for Havre were Nystrom in the 400, Kelsey Malsam in the 3,200 and both relay squads

On the boys side, it was the complete opposite as CMR dominated the dual, winning all but five events to score a 100-45 win.

Havre's only double winner was senior Kasey Barsotti, who dominated the distance events. Barsotti ran a solid 4:45 in the 1,600-meter run, beating his nearest opponent by five seconds. He was even better in the 3,200, posting a time of 10:13.49, which was a minute and a half faster than the second-place runner.

Scott Robinson took home the 400-meter dash title with a time of 52.50. Robinson added a pair of seconds in the javelin and discus.

Patch Wirtzberger added Havre's other individual win in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.00. Wirtzberger beat teammate Tyson Parman, who ran a 44.90. The Ponies' only other title came in the long relay with a time of 3:49.61.
