Pony girls finish seventh at Class A state

It wasn't the finish the Havre High girls track team was looking for this past weekend. But the Ponies battled severe weather and severe competition on their way to a seventh-place finish at the Class A state track and field championships in Butte.

Havre finished the meet with 30 team points, which put them in a tie for seventh place with Stevensville. As expected, Polson captured first-place honors with 58 points, behind four gold medals from standout Kasey Harwood.

Harwood captured the triple jump, the 400 meters the 100-meter hurdles, and she set a new Class A record on her way to the 300 meter hurdle title. Despite the Pirates' championship, they did not exactly dominate the field like many anticipated. Columbia Falls came in second with 51 points, and Anaconda finished a close third with 49.5 points.

Havre got things off to a fairly good start on Friday afternoon with jumper Carmen Neuens.

Neuens finished second in the long jump with a leap of 16-3. That jump put her right behind Butte Central's Kim Legree. Later in the day, Neuens got her team on the board with a fifth-place tie in the high jump. Neuens jumped 5-0 even to give Havre nine team points after the first day of competition.

Saturday did not go as well for some of the favored Blue Pony athletes. Havre High senior Kelsey Smith finished a very solid fifth in the 100 meters and teammate Rylee O'Connell added a sixth-place finish in that event. Smith also earned a second-place finish in the pole vault. Smith vaulted 10-0 even to put her in a tie with Ashley Taylor of Sidney. Brianne Schipmann of Glendive captured the event fairly easily with a final vault of 10-6.

The Ponies also got points from Alicia Overcast, but not in several events as they had expected. Overcast did manage a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. Overcast ran a solid time of 46.1, but finished behind both Harwood's record-setting time and Schipmann.

Havre also finished third in the 400-meter relay behind Stevensville and Whitefish. The team of Kelsey West, Kelsey Smith, Mandi Nystrom and O'Connell ran a 50.51 to finish behind the Bulldogs and Yellowjackets.

On the boys side of the meet, the Whitefish Bulldogs dominated the field from start to finish. Whitefish scored 85 points to easily outdistance second-place Livingston, which scored 47. Central A champion Butte Central was third with 37 points.

Meanwhile, Havre finished last with just two team points overall. The Ponies' lone place points came from junior Scott Robinson who finished fifth in the 800 meters.
