The Havre Baseball Jamboree wasn't exactly kind to the Havre Comets. After falling to the Glasgow Reds on Thursday to open their games, the Comets lost three straight games to close out the weekend.
"Too many errors and too many mental mistakes," said Comets manager Andy Smith. "We hurt ourselves with those two things all weekend."
On Friday, the Comets watched a two-run lead turn into a six-run deficit in just one inning in an 11-4 loss to the Deer Lodge Wranglers.
Havre went into the top of the fifth inning with a 4-2 lead, only to see it disappear. Deer Lodge scored eight runs in the inning, spurred on by four Comet errors.
"We always seem to have that one bad inning," Smith said. "We make a couple of errors and things just kind of get out of hand."
Tyson Anderson led the Havre offense with three hits, including a double and an RBI triple. Bill Siebrasse added a pair of hits, while Sean Peterson and John Christian each added RBI singles.
Austin Small took the loss for Havre, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits. The Comets committed eight errors and left seven runners on base.
Things got worse on Saturday as the Comets suffered a tough 5-4 loss to the 15-year-old Havre Babe Ruth All-Star team.
Down 2-0 after five innings, the Comets rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. The All-Stars tied the game in the sixth, and the Comets promptly answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own. The All-Stars got two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. The Comets did get runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to bring them in.
Tanner Donoven got the win on the mound for the All-Stars in relief of Michael Erickson. Donoven allowed just one run and one hit while striking out three batters in two innings of work.
Brian Heath led the All-Star offense with three hits and an RBI. Ryan Callahan added two hits and an RBI, while Erickson contributed an RBI single.
The Comets got a two-run single from Sean Peterson and two hits from Scott Ladenburg.
"We had our chances," Smith said. "We just couldn't get runners in."
The Comets closed out the Jamboree on a sour note with a 16-2 loss to the Great Falls Black Sox on Sunday morning.
Great Falls banged out 11 hits and took advantage of six Comet errors in the win. Of the 16 Black Sox runs scored off pitchers Anderson and Ladenburg, only three runs were earned.
Havre had only six hits in the game, with Josh Morse getting the only RBI.
Despite not getting a win, Smith saw plenty of good things.
"We had some really good innings," he said. "The kids played hard the whole weekend. They never gave up and that's what I want to see, is them compete.
"We just need to keep our heads in it because it's not about where you start, but where you finish. We know we're going to keep working hard and keep getting better."
