Northstars crush Vauxhall in doubleheader

The Havre Northstars' dominance of Northern District opponents continued again on Saturday as they crushed the Vauxhall Spurs in a pair of conference games.

Havre scored 17 runs in each game, pounded out a total 25 hits in two games - including 12 extra base-hits - and remained undefeated and atop the district standings.

In the opening game, Jordon Patterson and Ian Spencer provided the power for the Northstars in a 17-2 win.

Patterson's grand slam home run in the second inning capped an eight-run inning that broke open a 0-0 game.

Patterson started off the inning with a single and then ended the inning with his first home run of the season, scoring Patch Wirtzberger, Trent Normandy and Ian Spencer. Daine Solomon added an RBI double in the inning.

The Northstars continued the offensive onslaught in the third inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits.

Jeff Tibbals and Ben Erickson banged out RBI doubles and Ricky Houim and Wirtzberger had RBI singles. The big hit of the inning came from Spencer, who hit his team-high ninth home run of the season with a three-run shot.

Havre added another run in the fourth on a RBI double from Patterson and another in the sixth on a Wirtzberger double.

Brandon Morse worked five innings on the mound to pick up his eighth win of the season. Morse allowed two runs - none earned - on four hits while striking out six batters.

Patterson finished the game 3-4 with five RBIs while Solomon was 3-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.

In the nightcap, Havre's bats remained hot as the Northstars hung another 17 runs on the scoreboard in a 17-1 win.

Normandy gave Havre a 2-0 lead with a two-run single, and Patterson picked right up where he left off in the first game, ripping a two-run home run.

The Northstars added two more in the fourth on RBI singles from Wirtzberger and Normandy. Things got out of hand in the sixth as Havre scored 11 runs on just four hits and turned the game into a rout.

Normandy continued to have the hot bat, ripping a three-run double and adding another RBI in the inning. Solomon added a two-run double and Cory Junck had an RBI single in the inning.

Normandy finished the day with seven RBIs on three hits. Wirtzberger and Patterson added two hits and two RBIs each for the Northstars.

Ian Spencer had little trouble on the mound for Havre, pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits, to pick up his fifth win of the season.

With the wins, Havre moved to 18-0 in the Northern District and 34-15 overall.

They return to action today with a conference doubleheader in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
