Havre 14-, 15-year-olds second at state

During the middle of summer, the last thing you worry about is players coming down with the flu or any kind of sickness. But strange things always seem to happen at state tournament time.

The Havre 14- and 15-year-old All-Star team battled a mystery sickness that affected over half of the team and still came within a run of its state title dream.

"I think of our 14 players only four weren't feeling sick," said Havre co-coach Tony Vigliotti. "We aren't sure where it came from, but we had some really sick kids; two of them had to go to the hospital."

Havre dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker in nine innings to Kalispell in the title game to fall just short of pulling off the upset win.

Kalispell grabbed an early 2-0 lead off starter Anthony Wirtzberger in the bottom of the first.

The All-Stars rallied in the top of the fourth as Tanner Donovan got things going with a double, later scoring on a Wirtzberger single. Ryan Callahan slammed a two-run home run, scoring Wirtzberger to put Havre up 3-2.

Kalispell retook the lead in the fifth, scoring two runs off reliever Logan Reichelt to go back up 4-3. Havre tied the game in the sixth when Donovan launched a solo home run to knot the score at four.

After both teams remained scoreless for the next two innings, Kalispell brought home the title taking advantage of a lead-off walk and a pair of timely singles to score the game-winning run.

Reichelt took the loss in relief, allowing two runs in four innings. Donovan led Havre offensively with three hits with a pair of doubles and a home run.

"They just beat us," Vigliotti said. "It was a good game and we didn't do anything to lose the game, they just did what they had to do to win it. They're a very good team. Coming into the tournament most people thought it would be Butte and Kalispell playing for the title, but I knew that we could be right there at the end."

Havre advanced to the championship game by knocking off the other tournament favorite - Butte.

After falling to Butte 5-1 in pool play, Havre avenged the loss in dramatic fashion with a 5-4 win in the semifinals.

Scott Vigliotti's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth broke open a 4-4 game and proved to be the game-winning run.

"Scott got a big hit for us in a clutch situation," said Tony Vigliotti. "The kids were really excited to beat Butte after losing to them earlier in the tournament."

The All-Stars success early in the game came from an unlikely hero. Jeremiah Moog, who hadn't pitched in over a month, kept Butte's big lefthanded hitters off balance over five innings, allowing just three runs and seven innings.

"Butte has about five lefthanded hitters so we decided to throw Jeremiah against them since he's lefthanded," Vigliotti said. "He hadn't pitched in awhile, but he came in and did a great job. He doesn't throw really hard, but he was effective. Then we brought Tanner in and he throws a little harder which made it tougher on Butte.

Donovan pitched the final two innings to pick up the win. Vigliotti, Wirtzberger and Marshall Cartwright all had two hits each to lead Havre.

In the quarterfinals, Havre avenged its other loss in pool play with a 10-5 win over the Hi-Line All-Stars.

Hi-Line defeated Havre 10-2 earlier in the tourney, thanks to one big inning. Havre returned the favor in the quarterfinals.

Down 4-3, Havre exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth as Moog ripped a two-run double and Cartwright had a run scoring in the big inning. Havre also took advantage of two Hi-Line errors and a three walks in the inning.

Reichelt picked up the win in relief of Wirtzberger, who threw only one inning and was too sick to play the rest of the game. Reichelt pitched six innings allowing five runs on nine hits.

Havre had 12 hits in the game as Donovan had three hits, while Moog had a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Bryan Heath chipped in with two hits.

Havre finished 2-2 in pool play, defeating Glacier 7-5 in its opening game on Thursday and beating Glendive 8-4 on Saturday. Donovan picked up both wins on the mound as Havre played very shorthanded.

"Ryan Callahan and Anthony Wirtzberger had to go to the hospital on Friday night and get fluids because they were so dehydrated," Vigliotti said. "And the other players weren't exactly feeling great either. But we gutted it out in pool play the best we could."

For the weekend, Donovan and Moog were the offensive leaders. Donovan had 11 hits and Moog had eight hits. Heath had seven hits on the weekend.

"Obviously, the kids were down right after the championship game," Vigliotti said. "But about an a half-hour later, they realized that for everything we went through on the weekend, second place was pretty good."
