Hays woman dies in vehicle rollover

A Hays woman was killed early Wednesday when the pickup she was driving rolled on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.

The Montana Highway Patrol identified the victim as Bernelda L. Bell, 53.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight about 6 miles north of Lodge Pole, Highway Patrol officer Jeff Martin said today.

Martin attributed the crash to inattentive driving.

Bell was driving east on Tribal Route 129 when the 1990 Toyota pickup she was in drifted off the left side of the road, according to an MHP report. Bell steered the truck sharply to the right, causing it to veer back onto the pavement and toward the right side of the road, the report said. She overcorrected to the left, causing the truck to enter a counterclockwise spin as it went off the right shoulder of the road.

The truck rolled multiple times and came to a rest on the passenger side facing north, according to the report.

Bell, who was wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected through the driver's door window. She died at the scene, Martin said.

Bell was alone. The wreck was reported about 5:20 a.m. Wednesday, Martin said.
