Snow forces changes for HHS tennis teams

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News [email protected]

Snow, snow and more snow. Although the white stuff didn't pile up in record numbers in Havre like in other parts of the state, it's certainly affected the Havre High boys and girls tennis teams' schedule this week. On Tuesday, the Blue Ponies didn't make a scheduled trip to Great Falls for duals against CMR and Great Falls High, and now the Ponies won't be making the trip to the Great Falls Invitational either. The Great Falls meet has been cancelled due to massive amounts of snow which fell on the area this week. “They (Great Falls) just won't have the courts ready in time, there's just too much snow,” HHS head coach George Ferguson said. “It's a shame. The Great Falls tournament is one of our biggest tune-ups for the postseason. We would have played some really good teams down there. So it's definitely a missed opportunity for us.” Havre was slated to dual Bozeman and Billings Senior today and Billings West and Cut Bank on Saturday. However, the Ponies will still get in work this weekend. HHS has adjusted its schedule and will now host duals against Conrad and Cut Bank on Saturday at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts. “With what's going on with the weather these days, these matches will be big for us,” Ferguson said. “You just don't know when the next time you'll get on the court will be with how unsettled the weather is. So we're grateful to the fact that we still have two duals to play on Saturday, and we're excited to play them on our courts. We don't get to play in Havre very often, so we're excited about that.” The Ponies had gone four weeks without an interruption, including last week's trip to the prestigious Helena Invitational. But the record-setting storm which struck Central Montana earlier this week just wouldn't let tennis happen in Great Falls. However, HHS is hopeful it will make up its duals with the Rustlers and Bison on Monday. “If things work out, we'll play a lot of tennis in a short amount of time,” Ferguson said. Saturday will be good for us, and then we'll go to Great Falls on Monday, and we have our big predivisional meet in Lewistown next Saturday. “The divisional tournament is right around the corner now,” he added. “So we need all the matches we can get in order to be ready, and hopefully, starting this weekend, that will happen.” The Havre girls and boys are slated to dual Conrad at 9 a.m. Saturday in Havre, and Cut Bank is set to face the Blue Ponies at 1 p.m. All of the action will take place at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts.
