HOWARD ROWIN obituary

Our beloved dad, grandpa and uncle, Howard “Black Jack” Rowin, 89, went to be with the love of his life, Thursday afternoon, June 25, 2009, at his home in Havre, with his two angels, Sue and Ron by his side, Howard died of natural causes.

Cremation has taken place and his Memorial Service will be 2 p.m. today at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel with Rowlie Hutton officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Highland Cemetery. A fellowship will be held at the Eagles immediately after the graveside service. Memorials in Howard's honor may be made to a memorial of one's choice. Services and arrangements have been entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home. Howard was born May 5, 1920, in Havre, Mont., to Leonard and Albertina (Nelson) Rowin. He was raised and educated in Havre. He entered into the U.S. Army and served during World War II in Pearl Harbor, Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines and the Aleutian Islands. He was a decorated veteran receiving two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and returned home to Havre. He worked as a clerk for the Great Northern and then the Burlington Northern railroads. He married Ella May Cady Erickson on Oct. 25, 1952. Together they lived in Havre and raised their children. Howard enjoyed fishing, gardening, his peacocks and family gatherings at the farm where he would make his worldfamous spaghetti. He was preceded in death by his parents, the love of his life for 52 years, his wife, Ella; brothers, Bob Rowin and Jack and Butch Converse, daughters,Charlene Rowin, Donna Cowdery, Willa Kooch and Phyllis Christopherson and one son, Melvin Erickson Jr. Howard is survived by his children: daughters, Sue Roberts, Laura Hafner and Betty (Bill) Hafner all of Havre, Mont., Doris (Bob) Bishop of Great Falls, Mont.; sons, Dave (Dee) Rowin and Ron Rowin all of Havre, Mont. And John Richard Rowin of Washington state; sisters, Dolla (Jim) Weaver of Belgrade, Mont., Bonnie Nichol of Great Falls, Mont., Donna (Bob) Barnaby of Belgrade, Mont.; brother Clint Rowin of Tarzana, Calif.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-greatgrandchildren, great-great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dad, you were the kindest, gentlest most giving man I've ever known, I will miss you Dad. n Dave.
