Solomon files for mayor

Tim Leeds Havre Daily News [email protected]

Former Hill County Sheriff Tim Solomon filed his candidacy for Havre mayor this morning, the second candidate to enter the race. Solomon's announcement sets up a Democratic primary with Kmart assistant manager Gary Glock, who had previously filed for mayor. The deadline for filing is 5 p.m. Thursday. No Republicans, including incumbent Bob Rice, had filed for mayor as of this morning. Only one of Havre's city council races was contested as of this morning, and one race had no candidates. Incumbent Republican Terry Schend has filed for re-election as alderman in Ward 2, while Janet Trethewey filed for election in that ward as a Democrat. Democrats Allen “Woody” Woodwick and Gerry Veis have filed for re-election in Wards 4 and 1, respectively. No challengers had filed in their races as of this morning. No one had filed for the race in Ward 3 this morning, including incumbent Republican Robert Kaftan. In the races in Hingham, only incumbent at-large alderman Roger Haas had filed as of this morning. The terms of Mayor Ray Lipp and the atlarge alderman Rod Spicher, both fouryear terms, and Larry Horinek, serving a two-year term, are ending this year. In a press release, Solomon, 54, said his experience in government would help him if elected mayor. After retiring as sheriff and county coroner, he has worked as manager of the Great Northern Fairgrounds and has filled in as manager of the Havre City County Airport while its manager, Bill Arvin, is deployed to Iraq. “I've worked with the department heads of both the city and county for over 34 years, and I have a very good understanding of both of their operations,” he said. “I own both city and county property and as a taxpayer to both I am keenly interested in seeing the two governments working together Better. It is never in the best interest of the taxpayer for the two governments to be at odds most especially in these economic times. “I have a lot of practical experience including balancing budgets, creating jobs, negotiating with unions, and management in general,” he added. Solomon, a Havre High School graduate and fifthgeneration Hill County resident, worked while sheriffin the 1990s on the passage and opening of the new detention center and sheriff's office facility. He is past president of the Montana Sheriffs & Peace Officers Association and an honorary lifetime member. He is also past president of the Montana's Coroners Association. Solomon has worked on community projects including serving on the board of directors for the HELP Committee while it worked to open the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line and still works with that organization. Solomon is a member of the Hill County Fairgrounds Foundation, which works to make fairground improvements.
