The weeklong camp Montana Actors' Theatre is holding for area youths culminates Friday night with two performances of “Snow White.” Darcy Zook, who is running the camp with Stephi McLain, Andi Daniel and Angela Pratt, said so many children came out to this year's camp two performances will be held. This year, 51 children came to the weeklong camp, held at the theater in Cowan Hall on the Montana State University-Northern campus. The camp is aimed at teaching young children about theater it is open to children from age 5 through those entering eighth grade next fall through workshops, games and activities. In past camps, part of the activity was having the children write their own play, but this year a script was selected to allow focusing on how to audition for a part. Last week Zook said the play selected is not the Disney production of “Snow White,” so it should be a new experience for most of the children. Other aspects of acting the camp focuses on include teaching the children how to speak clearly and project their voice on stage; how to focus and take cues from other actors; and how to build sets and make costumes and props. “There are exercises in the whole realm of theater,” Zook Said. The camps are fun for the children involved, she said, but they are told to be focused. “We tell them on first day that if they are going to be an actor and be prepared they have to be serious it is a lot of fun but they have to take seriously,” Zook said. The play is scheduled to run Friday in the Cowan Hall theater at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The production is free-of-charge and Zook said all are welcome to attend.
