Unofficial results released in Havre city elections

Havre voters have spoken, giving Democrat Tim Solomon the nod in the primary election to face incumbent Republican Bob Rice in the mayor's race in the general election. Solomon, manager of the Great Northern Fairgrounds and former Hill County sheriff, defeated Kmart assistant manager and former Havre City Council member Gary Glock 1,290 to 543 in the election that ended Tuesday night, listed in the unofficial results released by the Hill County Clerk and Recorder's Office. In his uncontested race on the Republican ballot, Rice received 513 votes. In the only other contested race, the non-partisan race for city judge, Havre firefighter David Krezelak received 1,413. Margaret Hencz, director of the domestic abuse program at District IV Human Resources Development Council, received 857 votes. Both advance to the general election. The election had a high turnout, with 58 percent of registered voters returning their ballots citywide. Although not all voters were pleased with the mail election one commented that he didn't like the process while he was dropping off his ballot Hill County Clerk and Recorder Diane Mellem said most were. “People seem to like (the mailedout ballots,)” Mellem said, adding that there were “lots of happy faces that come to our counter delivering ballots.” She said the turnout was steady, especially for the last week or so. Some 50 to 60 ballots were returned between 5 and 8 p.m. Tuesday. In uncontested elections, the number of votes were lower, but many people did mark their ballots. More votes were returned on the Democratic ballots, which included the contested mayor's primary. Both candidates in each ward advance to the general election. In Ward 1, incumbent Democrat Gerry Veis received 332 votes, while Republican Kathy Sangray received 127 in the city council primary. In the mayoral race in the ward, Solomon received 338 votes and Glock received 119. Rice received 129 votes in Ward 1. Turnout in Ward 1 was 60 percent of registered voters. In the city council race in Ward 2, incumbent Republican Terry Schend received 117 votes, while Democrat Janet Trethewey received 297. Solomon received 342 votes and Glock received 172. Rice received 133 votes in the ward. Turnout in Ward 2 was 62 percent. In Ward 3, incumbent Republican Robert Kaftan received 112 votes while Democrat Brenda Skornogoski received 297 votes in the council election. Solomon received 308 votes in the ward, while Glock received 133. Rice received 135 votes. The ward saw a 57-percent turnout. In the Ward 4 council primary, incumbent Democrat Allen “Woody” Woodwick, who is running unopposed in the primary and the general election, received 341 votes. Solomon received 301 votes, while Glock received 119. Rice received 116 votes in Ward 4, which saw a 51-percent turnout.
