LILLIAN BERTHA HAMMOND obituary

Lillian Bertha Hammond, 79, died of natural causes on Tuesday Sept. 22, 2009, at her home in Havre.

Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. today at the Fifth Avenue Christian Church with Daniel Whittaker officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the church immediately after graveside services. Memorial contributions in Lillian's honor may be made to the Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen or to a memorial of one's choice. Lillian was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Shelby, Mont., to Hillard Lee Roy and Bertha (Gorman) Burch. As a young girl she moved with her family to Havre in 1934. She attended Havre Public Schools. She married Ralph Hammond on Jan. 31, 1976, at the Sixth Avenue Christian Church. The couple made their home in Havre and raised a family. Lillian operated a day care in her home for several years and helped raise all of her grandchildren. She worked in cafés for years and operated the Glacier Café. Lillian was a member of the Senior Companion Program and volunteered her time at the soup kitchen and the Northern Montana Hospital Gift Shop. She also delivered the Havre Daily News for many years. She enjoyed word-find puzzles, horses, dogs and cats. She sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School and served as a Girl Scout leader. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Hammond; her son, Cal Leroy Sargent, and two sisters. Lillian is survived by her children; daughters; Gaile Labbe of Great Falls, Mont., Sherry Fennell of Mandan, N.D., and Bertha Linda Bosworth of Havre, Mont., Christina Bertha Hammond of Warm Springs, Mont.; sons: William (Bill) Lee Sargent and Eallen Frances Sargent, both of Havre, Mont.; sister, Ethel Willis of Cherla Vista, Calif., and a brother David Burch of Ogden, Utah; six grandchildren: Trisha Sargent, Leroy Bosworth, Tanya Murphy, John Labbe, Sean Fennell and Markus Sargent; and eight great-grandchildren.
