Surging Pioneers crush Highwood

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News [email protected]

With a forfeit and a couple of byes, this weekend's football action was limited across the Hi-Line But still moving along were the No. 2 Big Sandy Pioneers out of the Northern C Six-Man. On Friday the Pioneers were on the road where they defeated the No. 7 Highwood Mountaineers 42-6 in a divisional showdown. The Pioneers are looked at to be a strong favorite as state champion contenders in Six-Man football, and their play over the last two weeks has really anchored that theory. Against the Mountaineers, the Pioneers set the tone of the game early. And on three touchdowns, they opened the first quarter with a 21-0 lead. Ryan Miller first found the end zone on an eight-yard rush. Kruz McDermot then scored a seven-yard rushing touchdown of his own before Miller would add another rushing touchdown to his resume, this time from 15 yards out. While the Pioneer's defense was able to shut out the Mountaineers for the first three quarters, it gave the Pioneer offense plenty of opportunity to keep adding to the scoreboard. In the second quarter, the Pioneers added two more scores. McDermot accounted for his second touchdown of the afternoon on a 15-yard carry. And Scott Draga got in on the action on yet another rushing touchdown. Draga's touchdown came from 19 yards out and gave the Pioneers a 35-0 halftime lead. The third quarter was uneventful for both teams. And while the Mountaineers would finally find the end zone in the fourth, the Pioneers would also add one more score. This time around it was Trevor Lackner who found the end zone on the ground for the Pioneers. Lackner rushed from 28 yards out, and added the finishing touch on the dominating Pioneers victory. With the win the Pioneers moved to 5-0 on the season. Big Sandy travels to top-ranked Great Falls Central on Saturday. The District 2B Harlem Wildcats weren't as fortunate on Friday night. Hosting the Wolf Point Wolves, the Wildcats were handed a devastating 20-6 loss. The Wolves slowly moved out of reach from the Wildcats, putting up one touchdown in the first three quarters. But it was Jeff Hanks who really hurt the Wildcats. Hanks rushed for 136 yards, which included a four-yard rushing touchdown. He also got on the board through special teams, adding a 26-yard blocked punt return in the second quarter. The Wildcats only score came in the fourth quarter, after being shut out the previous three. And it was Branden Hammond who found pay dirt on a 26-yard reception from Taylor First Raised. Hammond was one of the loan bright spots, as he went on to catch five passes for 62 yards and the score. The Wildcats have dropped to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in league with the loss. But on Friday they hope to get things back on track as they take to the road to face Plentywood. On Saturday, the North Star Knights and Box Elder Bears should have met in Rudyard, but due to a Bears' forfeit, their was not contest. The Knights take the win, and advance to 3-2. And they will be in action again this Saturday as they host Valier. The Bears dropped to 0-5 with the loss, and plan to host winless Heart Butte on Saturday. They Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds were also in action this weekend, but the results were less than desirable. Hosting the No. 4 Class C Scobey Spartans, the Thunderbirds were dominated. And the Spartans left town with a 66-8 victory. With the loss, the Thunderbirds fell to 1-4 and now must return to the road to face Fairview on Friday. The Northern C Chester/J-I Hawks and Chinook Sugarbeeters both had bye weeks, but will return to action this Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, the Hawks (1-4) will host No. 5 Belt. And on Friday, the Beeters (1-4) will host Simms.
