Hearing on medical marijuana is tonight

Residents will have a chance during a public hearing at 6:30 tonight in City Hall to comment on an emergency interim ordinance to place a moratorium on new medical marijuana businesses in the city. People have already been vocal, both in support of and against medical marijuana businesses. Most have agreed that regulation of the businesses is necessary, and the ordinance will allow current operations to maintain their business at their current levels. New businesses will not be allowed in the city for 6 months. The ordinance also includes a provision that all current operations must report their location and number of patients within 10 days. Exactly who business owners must report to has not yet been decided, and discussion is expected tonight. Because the ordinance will be an emergency one, only one reading after the public hearing is required instead of the usual two before the ordinance takes effect. Council members also will read for the second and final time tonight an ordinance prohibiting the sale or distribution of medical marijuana by itinerant vendors. Also on the agenda for action tonight is an ordinance change to how the city handles warnings for noxious and nuisance weeds. The change will mean that land owners are given one notice, if necessary, between May 1 and Sept. 31 and 10 days to respond by cutting weeds and grass to no more than eight inches in height.
