AmeriCorps volunteers make a difference

As the chair of the Montana Commission on Community Service, I would like to recognize all the positive change that is happening in our state as a result of Montanans becoming engaged in their communities and finding ways to make a difference. Montana joins the rest of the nation in celebrating AmeriCorps Week, May 8-15 by spotlighting the vital work done by AmeriCorps members across the state. Since 1994, more than 5,500 Montanans have served more than 5 million hours and have qualified for education awards totaling more than $11 million. Americorps members provide service to meet education, environmental, health, economic and other pressing needs in our communities. Upon completion of their service, members can receive an education award to apply toward college or to give to someone in their family to attend school, which is an excellent benefit. I am proud to be a part of the Montana Commission on Community Service and applaud all the hard work done by AmeriCorps members and community volunteers across our great state. We can all find ways to get involved and make our communities a better place to live.
