City Council to look at annual tax assessments tonight

Havre City Council has a slim agenda for its meeting at City Hall tonight, with the majority of actions to vote on the first readings of its annual tax assessments.

City Clerk and Finance Director Lowell Swenson said council must vote each year on the assessments used to pay for city services.

The agenda tonight includes property tax assessments to pay for Bull Hook maintenance and street maintenance, and taxes to pay for maintaining street lights and garbage collection.

Also up for consideration are housing program requests, the contract with Opportunity Link Inc. for airport management services and committee reports.

Swenson said the only major increase in the tax assessments would be in garbage collection, for which he said Havre is on the low end of the spectrum in the state.

He said the proposed assessment could increase the rates for individual Havre residents about $10 a year.

The council meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The council's Finance Committee is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. today.
