Election moves eight forward to Rocky Boy general election

The Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation has released the results of its primary election, with eight of 39 candidates now moving on to the general election for four positions on its Tribal council.

Incumbent Vice Chair and state Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy was the top vote-getter, with 292 of the total 5,204 votes.

Next were Ricky Morsette, an incumbent, with 290 votes, Ted E. Whitford Sr. with 284 votes, incumbent Harlan Gopher Baker with 278 votes, Gerald Small with 266 votes, Tim Koop with 245 votes, Russell Standing Rock with 235 votes, and Neal Rosette Sr. with 233 votes.

Council member Russell T. Gopher, who received 189 votes, will not advance to the general election.

The eight-member Business Committee, the official name of the Chippewa Cree council, holds elections every two years in staggered elections. The election this year does not include the chair of the council.

The vice chair is selected by the members of the council once its members take their seats.

The candidates not making the cut, with votes ranging from 33 to 213, were Luanne Belcourt, Hugh Big Knife, Carter Coffee, Wade Colliflower, Joe Demontiney Jr., Peter Demontiney Sr., Glenn Eagleman, Brenda TopSky Gardipee, Jonathan Gopher,
