Judge Swandall is best qualified for Montana high court

Editor:

Voting for a candidate for justice of the Supreme Court should not be taken lightly.

This position requires experience and should definitely be filled by a candidate who has judicial experience. Nels Swandall has that experience with 16 years as a state district judge.

A Supreme Court justice is not an entry-level position.

Any company looking for a person to fill a high level position is going to require a certain number of years experience.

In my opinion one should not get elected as a Supreme Court justice without spending time behind the bench.

A law school graduate is not going to get a job as a county attorney or a district attorney. One would have to prove their knowledge in the private sector and get real time experience with clients, opposing attorneys and their clients, then in the courtroom.

Nels has that private sector experience, five years as a highly respected lawyer in Park County, then 12 years as the county attorney in Park County.

One does not get elected to the Supreme Court and then learn how to be a judge.

Nels proved himself as an attorney, then county attorney and is now in his 16th year as a very competent and fair district judge.

Being a business owner for 30-plus years gave me the ability to fill a leadership position in my business with the person best qualified to fill that position.

When looking for prospective employees I looked at their knowledge of the job and number of years experience before hiring them. The person with the best qualifications was the one who was hired. This, in my opinion, is just good business. It would be good business for the state of Montana to elect a person with the qualifications and experience to serve the people in the best possible fashion.

I think that Nels would bring a breath of fresh air and new insights to the position of supreme court justice.

He would be able to make decisions in a nonpartisan way as usual, because of his diverse background and experience.

When you elect Nels Swandal on Nov. 2 one thing is for certain, he'll hit the floor running as he already knows what it requires to be a judge.

In closing three words come to mind: experience, experience, experience.
