4th Street grass fire spares nearby buildings

More than a third of an acre of grass on the 10th block of 4th Street is now charred earth after a grass fire early Wednesday evening. "It was obviously near some structures that are in town, but none of those were damaged," Fire Chief Dave Sheppard said this morning. Two firefighters responded in one truck to the scene at 5:04 p.m. Even though the fire came within eight feet of two structures, no one was evacuated because there was no real threat, he said, and no buildings sustained damaged. It took approximately 40 minutes to extinguish the fire and search for a cause. "There were some witnesses that said they saw children running from the area, but firefighters were unable to find any obvious cause of ignition," Sheppard said, adding that the cause is still under investigation by his department. No spent matches were found at the scene, he said. Grass fires in town are not uncommon, Sheppard said. "Especially summer months — we often get fires in some kind of open land." Keeping grass in lots cut short and being aware of match and cigarette disposal helps minimize the risk, he added.
