News you can use
On the evening of March 27, approximately 275 people gathered in an old gym in Hingham to taste the cuisine of local "chefs," have a glass of wine or beer, play some corny games, bid on numerous items, visit with some old friends and make some new ones. The event was Men Who Cook for Women Who Wine. For the past four years, a group of us have been putting together this fundraising event. Every year we get more people to help. They just seem to show up. They help with donations, run around and get tables and chairs. They are there to set up and clean up. Every year we get a few more chefs to cook. These people, friends, just show up and take on whatever needs to be done. And you should see breakdown and clean up. It the coolest thing to witness. When the auctioneer is done, and the last thank you is said, everyone there just seems to know to fold up their chair and set it to the side. The garbage cans come out, tables get wiped and broken down and things get done and all smoothly. We don't ask, they all just do it. And it makes me so proud to be part of it all, proud to have such great friends and to know just how big this community is. Just so you know, that night all those people helped raise roughly $23,000 to start a fund called A Serving of Hope from Men Who Cook. This fund will help the seriously ill in our area with emergency travel. The fund will be ready for use by July 1. A big thank-you goes to our chefs and their culinary delights. You guys are the best. To all the donors, without your generosity we could not do this. The "Bra Ladies" from Whitewater/Loring, you don't know what you've started! All the volunteers and friends, you are amazing. And to everyone who was there that night, thank you. We are already hearing rumbles of what's coming next year, so we hope to see you there. Thank you. Cathie Haas Hingham
