Budget hearing goes quietly

The Havre City Council held a public hearing on next year's $15.7 million proposed budget Monday night and no one came to ask any questions or make comments.

The hearing started at 7 p.m.

After some brief statements from a few council members and an unanswered appeal for input from the mostly empty room, the meeting was recessed at 7:05 p.m.

Council will vote on the budget Wednesday at 6 p.m. The spending plan calls for no major new programs and imposes no major cuts.

The budget calls for no appropriations for the North Central Montana Transit system. Last year the city provided $25,000 for the system, which transports people from various Hi-Line communities to Havre and Great Falls.

Mayor Tim Solomon said the transit system did not request any money this year. The mayor said he checked with Hill County officials, who told him the system had not sought any county funding.
