The board of the local museum heard during its monthly meeting Monday about some successful activities and work close to beginning on a promotional mural.

Anna Brumley, who manages the Wahkpa Chu'gn Buffalo Jump archaeological site with her husband, archaeologist John Brumley, told the H. Earl and Margaret Turner Clack Memorial Museum board that the annual atlatl competition was a success.

She said the competition, in which people use a prehistoric weapon that uses a handle to throw a spear, saw about 100 people.

"It was really fun for a lot of people," Brumley said.

She said the tourist season for the site is essentially over, and now the focus is on bringing in students from area schools for tours.

Elaine Morse, chair of the museum's funding foundation, said work on retaining walls on Boot Hill Plaza along U.S. Highway 2 is progressing, and once that is done work erecting a brick mural promoting Wahkpa Chug'n can begin.

The mural will be built at the top of the hill on the west edge of town, where local businessman Bill Dritshulas is working on building a new hotel. The hotel and mural will be just east of Dritshulas' complex which includes his business Murphy's Pub.

The foundation hired Medicine Hat, Alberta, artist Jim Marshall to create the mural.

Morse said the annual meeting of the foundation is set for Oct. 23, with Blaine County musician, storyteller and performer Ken Overcast scheduled to entertain those at the meeting.

Museum manager John Gilbert said traffic in August, although down slightly from earlier in the summer, was good.

Gilbert said 909 people visited the museum in August, down slightly from the monthly average of 1,015.

"I think we did pretty well," he said, adding that sales in the museum gift shop were very good.

"It completely subsidized itself," he said.
