Local children — and history enthusiasts — have a chance to get a grip on the past Saturday, April 24, when the sixth annual Hands on History is held at the Holiday Village Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. "This fun and educational event provides a day filled with events and demonstrations designed to let children see how things were done in the past," Anna Brumley, who helps coordinate the event, said in a press release. Ha n d s o n History, presented by the H. Ear l and M a r g a r e t Turner Clack M e m o r i a l Museum Foundation, offers a plethora of events in and out of the mall in a fundraiser for the foundation. The proceeds are used to finance operation of the Clack Memorial Museum in the Holiday Village Mall and the Wahkpa Chu'gn Buf falo Jump archaeological site behind the mall. "This year, we are delighted to have a large number of individuals and businesses helping sponsor many of the activities for the children," said Brumley, who is manager of Wahkpa Chu'gn. She said more than 30 activities will be offered, including making ice cream; learning to throw an atlatl, the throwing spear used by Indians at Wahkpa Chu'gn to kill the bison that had survived the fall off the cliff; visiting the "chicken house" to watch a chicken being born and to learn to candle an egg; making a clothes pin doll; riding a horse; making a puppet; learning to tool leather; driving a "kid-powered" go cart; making a candle; and learning to cook buffalo meat using the stone boiling method. Free demonstrations will be offered throughout the day, including Native American dancing, music by the Halingstad fiddlers, music by the Taylor singers, dancing by Dani's Dancers and a demonstration by dog obedience trainer Fran Buell. Brumley said five free activities will be offered, courtesy of large donations made by businesses and individuals. "This year, we are delighted to have a large number of individuals and businesses helping sponsor many of the activities for the children," she said. Tickets are three for $1; 33 for $10 or 70 for $20. For more information, people can call Anna at 65-6417 or Elaine at 265-1376.
