Two fishing derbies will be held this weekend on Father's Day as an opportunity for fathers to spend the day with their children.
The Havre Rotary Club Annual Fishing Derby, a decades-old event, will be at Rotary Pond in Beaver Creek Park Sunday, with registration running from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Despite higher-than-normal water levels, the pond is safe, said Pat Lamphier, president of the Rotary Club.
From 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., children in boys and girls divisions in age groups of 3 to 6, 7 to 10 and 11 to 14 will fish for trout from the shore and medals will be awarded.
Two thousand trout, along with 10 lunkers, which are 3 1/2 pound fishes, have been planted in the pond.
"(Children) do have a good chance at one of those bigger ones, too," Lamphier said.
The derby is "a family outing where boys and girls can be with their parents and have a nice time and enjoy the free fishing," Lamphier said.
"We want them to learn the enjoyment of fishing and also something they can do productively," he said.
Learning to fish at a young age is important to children for the rest of their lives, he said, adding that once a generation of children is grown, they can teach their own children how to fish.
At Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation, registration for the second- annual fishing derby sponsored by the Chippewa Cree Tribe's Natural Resource Department begins at 9 a.m. at Brown's Dam.
Last year, despite the weather, the derby that was held at Bonneau Dam saw a good turnout, Leland Top Sky with the Natural Resource Department said.
This year the derby is set for Brown's Dam "because we do have more than one area to fish in," he said.
The dam area is one mile east of Box Elder, and signs will be up for people to follow.
Anglers will fish for the brown and rainbow trout from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. No boats will be allowed.
"Everybody will have an equal chance to fish from the shore," Top Sky said, cautioning people to be careful if wading.
The normal fishing permit fee is waived for the derby, but children will pay a $5 registration fee and adults will pay $10.
Cash prizes, as well as prizes for all the children participating, will be awarded, he said, and concessions will be sold.
