Hi-Line Football Roundup

CHINOOK — With the Hi-Line football season marching on, many local teams found themselves tested over the weekend.

Friday night in Chinook, the No. 8 Northern C Sugarbeeters hosted the No. 2 Fort Benton Longhorns in an 8-Man clash. And though the Beeters put up a fight, the Longhorns proved why they are state contenders, defeating the Beeters 44-24.

But to start, the Beeters came out and looked solid on both offense and defense.

In the games opening drive, and only second play of the game, the Beeters' Ben Stroh exploded out of the backfield for a 55-yard touchdown run. And after Tyler Molyneaux rushed for the two-point conversion, the Beeters took an early 8-0 lead.

The Chinook defense also showed up early.

On the Longhorn's ensuing drive the Beeters forced a turnover on downs but not before Chinook's Chris Haider forced a fumble that would have left the Beeters in excellent field position if not recovered by Fort Benton.

The Beeters second drive resulted in another touchdown. Both Molyneaux and Stroh set up the scoring drive with two big runs, and on the fifth play of the drive it was Stroh once again finding the end zone, this time from 19 yards out to give the Beeters a 14-0 lead after a failed conversion.

But after Chinook scored two quick touchdowns in the first six minutes of the first quarter, the Longhorns took over.

The Longhorns scored a touchdown with 5:07 left in the first quarter to narrow the gap to 14-6. And in the second quarter they scored three touchdowns with conversions on three straight possessions to take a 30-14 lead into the lockerroom at the half.

Riley Shaw scored on a 60-yard pass from Jackson Bramlette, Anders Andersen scored on a 19-yard pass from Derek Kittredge and Jackson Bramlette scored on a six-yard run to give the Longhorns the lead.

In the second quarter, Chinook also got intercepted two times putting a stop to any scoring threat.

The Beeters made one last push in the third quarter, but the Fort Benton offense couldn't be stopped.

The Sugarbeeters scored two points on a safety on the Longhorns first drive. And on the ensuing kick, Stroh scored his third touchdown on a 75-yard kick return. Molyneaux scored on the two point conversion, and the Beeters found themselves right back in the game, trailing only 30-24 with 9:35 left in the third quarter.

But a third interception by the Longhorn defense and two more touchdowns by their offense put the game away, giving Fort Benton the victory.

Chinook now sits with a 2-1 record and will play again on Friday when the Beeters travel to face the Simms Tigers.
