39 candidates run for Rocky Boy tribal council

A full slate of candidates, including incumbents, have come forward to try for the four positions open in the Oct. 5 primary election for the Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation Tribal council, the Chippewa Cree Tribe's Business Committee.

The list of candidates includes 39 enrolled members of the Chippewa Cree Tribe. When voting is complete and votes counted, the top eight vote-getters will move on to the Nov. 2 general election.

The Tribal council is composed of eight council members and the chair of the council. The positions are filled in staggered elections every two years, with the vice-chair position filled by a vote of the council following the seating of the new council.

The election this year does not include the chair position.

Absentee voting will be available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, and on Friday, Oct. 1, and Monday, Oct. 4, at the Tribal office at the Rocky Boy Agency. It is open to all registered voters who present a Tribal identification card.

The election raised some contention in 2008, when a candidate — Ken Blatt St. Marks, who is running again this year — contested the results. St. Marks said the election was not held according to requirements of the Tribal constitution and ordinances. The results were upheld by the Tribal election committee, then overturned by a Tribal judge when that decision was appealed.

The Tribe's appellate judge overturned that ruling on a jurisdictional issue.

The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Old Stone Child College gymnasium Oct. 5.

The candidates are incumbents Harlan Gopher Baker, Luanne Belcourt, Hugh Big Knife, Carter Coffee, Wade Colliflower, Joe Demontiney Jr., Peter Demontiney Sr., Glenn Eagleman, Brenda TopSky Gardipee, Jonathan Gopher, incumbent council member Russell T. Gopher,

Jesse W. Henderson, Ronald J. Henry Sr., Tim Koop, Pete T. LaMere, Junior Morsette, Larry Morsette Jr., incumbent council member Ricky Morsette, Luke Parisian, Alfred J. Parker, Sonny Roasting Stick, Neal Rosette Sr., David "Chubby" Russette Sr., Teddy Russette III,

Shane Saddler, Joshua "Waff" Seaton, Gerald Small, Stacey Small, Theron "Doggy" Small, Ken Blatt St. Marks, Russell Standing Rock, Donovan Stump, Marva Stump, Ronald "Ronnie" Stump Sr., Henry PEJohn Sutherland, Ted E. Whitford Sr., incumbent council vice chair Jonathan Windy Boy, Daryl "Buck" Wright and Kenneth Writing Bird.
