Secretary Napolitano: DHS willing to work with local group on 24-hour Wild Horse
by Tim Leeds
After announcing the Port of Wild Horse north of Havre will again have a longer period with summer hours, federal officials in Have Wednesday also said the Department of Homeland Security is willing to listen to — and work with — local groups about making it a 24-hour commercial port.
"We are going to keep the port open with the extended hours for another 12 to 18 months during that period we are very open to making it into a 24-7 port," Janet Napolitano, secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in a press conference following a town hall meeting in Havre. "But, as we do that and before we do that, what we need to have is kind of a combined plan from the community with the state with others as to how that 24-7 is going to be utilized.
U.S. Customs and Border Commissioner Alan Bersin announced during the town hall meeting that the extended period of summer hours would be brought back. He and Napolitano said at the end of the meeting and during the press conference that, with what they heard in Montana Wednesday, they will work with the community and state to look at ways to make it a 24-hour port.
"That's work that we will engage in and engage in as speedily as possible because we've heard today from a number of people what a value that could bring," Napalitano said.
"Lets put together a plan, and it's got to be a community-generated plan," she added. "It's got to come up from Montana, about how that 24-7 would work."
"And in conjunction with the Canadians," U.S. Sen. Max Baucus said. "There's a symbiosis here, there's a synergy here, that's going to work."
