Technology makes it easier to send us your news

The relationship between a newspaper and the community it serves is unique and special and unlike any other business/customer relationship. Every day we manufacture an entirely new product — no other industry comes to mind that can make that claim. And when one thinks that we have been doing this for five generations it is no wonder that our readers take their newspaper personally, like an heirloom being passed down from generation to generation. It is a strong statement when one hears the Havre Daily News referred to as, "my newspaper." Those two words define this unique and personal relationship that exists between a newspaper and its readers, and why the newspaper is the community's newspaper. Your newspaper is a familiar late afternoon fixture, which has been welcomed into homes like an old friend for 96 years. You probably have memories of dad coming home from work, tired and sitting in his favorite chair and calling out to bring him the paper. Over the years we have filled family scrapbooks, preserving memories of that championship game, sons and daughters going off to war and serving as the newspaper of record for the city and county, as well as for births, upcoming marriages, deaths, and yes even occasional gossip when gossip columns were in vogue. We are trusted with documenting and preserving the community's history for future generations. We welcome our role as the watchdog of your community. The newspaper business certainly has changed over the years, technology making it easier to turn out a daily newspaper, although our press is offset technology, circa 1960s. However the process of gathering the news and writing the news remains the same – we do it the good old fashion way, by attending functions, taking notes and typing it up, whether it's on a Mac keyboard, IBM Selectric or an old manual Underwood — the reporting process over the years has basically remained the same. Today's continually improving technology now affords us the opportunity to strengthen our unique relationship with our readers, by allowing you to participate in the news gathering process. Photographs and videos are now available instantly and can be sent to family and friends with a simple keystroke. Every reader now has the potential to be a journalist or photographer. We invite you to share this information with your newspaper. Whether it's an interesting picture or a story of your son's or daughter's sport teams, or a "lead" on something interesting going on in the community, we would really like to hear from you. Send your comments, pictures and leads to [email protected].
