Havre High netters start a new season

It's not often a Havre High athletic program gets overlooked. But with the youthfulness making up this year's varsity volleyball team, the Blue Ponies are looking to come out strong in their season opener.

On Saturday, the defending Central A champion Ponies will get their season started at Butte Central against the rival Maroons.

A season ago, the Ponies went 15-6 on the season and 9-1 in the conference, good enough to earn a co-conference championship with the Lewistown Golden Eagles. But after graduating nine seniors, including superstars Karla Hellegaard and Holly Cartwright, the Ponies want to make a statement early.

"I think we are really excited to play," Havre High head coach Melanie Skoyen said. "We're young and we know that teams aren't really looking for us to not do a whole lot this year, and that's why our kids want to go out and make a statement right away."

But the youth of the Ponies isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The HHS lineup houses a lot of volleyball talent and pure athletic ability. And what they lack in experience, they more than make up for with the love of the game and the excitement to take the floor.

Sophomore Sadie Seidel, juniors Jordan LaSalle, Jaclyn Evans and Sammy Evans and seniors Christina Mack and Paighton Gilman make up the starting varsity roster this season. Sophomore Davee McLeod, juniors Jenny Job and Juletta Don make up the rest of the varsity roster, and should also expect playing time as the Ponies are prepared to try a number of lineups and formations against the Maroons, as well as other opponents throughout the season.
