More federal money is heading to Stone Child College on Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation.

It was announced Friday that the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding $6.3 million among eight Tribal colleges and universities in five states.

Stone Child is one of three colleges in Montana receiving the money, including Fort Peck Community College in Poplar and Salish Kootenai College in Pablo.

Each of the three schools in Montana were awarded $800,000 to "help build, renovate, expand and equip their own facilities," according to the press release.

Stone Child President Melody Henry said that the money would be used for many changes across the campus.

The biggest project is the construction of a new day care center.

The college has two day care centers that would be consolidated in the new building.

In order to build the center, the college has to provide the funds to set up the foundation and the building utilities. The rest of the construction costs and materials would draw from the HUD award.

Some of the award will be used to purchase more equipment, including heart rate monitors for the school's new gym, built in the last year.

"It's important for the direction we are heading to have our new gym and day care and everything consolidated in one place," Henry said.

The money will also be used for a number of smaller jobs around the college such as replacing carpet in some buildings, landscaping and a drainage system update after damage from the flood earlier this year.

This award is the second of three that the college is hoping to use to fix things up.

Henry said the college is waiting to hear about another grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to make some exterior changes, such as sidewalks.
