Hi-Line Football Roundup

With the first weekend of the 2010 postseason in the books, two Hi-Line football teams still remain.

On Saturday, the Northern C Six-Man Big Sandy Pioneers and North Star Knights competed in the first round of the state playoffs. And in the Class C 8-Man playoffs, the Chinook Sugarbeeters and Chester/J-I Hawks also competed in first round action.

But with four Hi-Line teams making the cut before Saturday, only two made it out with their season in tact.

The No. 1 Pioneers hosted the No. 4 Central C Stanford-Geyser Wolves and came away with the dominating 48-21 win in Big Sandy.

Big Sandy got off to fast start on Saturday night. They came and dominated on both sides of the ball, capturing all momentum and never letting up. To start the game, the Wolves muffed a snap into the end zone and the Pioneers' Dallas Briese recovered for a quick score. Then on the ensuing kick, the Pioneers recovered an onside kick, which led to another quick score, this time coming from CJ Hanson on a 15-yard reception from Trevor Lackner.

"It's always nice to have a home game and have your home fans there to support you," Big Sandy head coach Greg King said. "From the get go the kids were excited. And they didn't lose it until the end of the game."

The Wolves scored three touchdowns. But they came in the fourth quarter when the Pioneers had most of the starters already on the sideline.

After scoring 26 points in the first quarter the Pioneers got out to a comfortable lead. Add adding eight more in the second, they took a 34-0 lead before the half. The Pioneers also scored a touchdown in the third as well as a touchdown in the fourth.

Lackner passed for 178 yards for the Pioneers as well as three touchdowns. And Ryan Miller had 10 carries for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Miller scored from 15 and 10 yards out, and also brought in a 45-yard reception for a score.

Kaden Beck and Colter Darlington also scored for the Pioneers. Beck scored on a 50-yard reception from Lackner, and Darlington scored on a 33-yard pass from Zac Leader.

The Pioneers will now prepare to host No. 3 Eastern Richey-Lambert at Saturday 1 p.m. in Big Sandy.

Chinook 42, Scobey 6

The 8-Man Beeters also earned a dominating win at home on Saturday.

Playing host to the No. 4 Eastern C Scobey Spartans, the Beeters grabbed a 42-6 win.

"We were excited," Chinook head coach Matt Molyneaux said. "And we were ready to play this football game. We played Scobey a few years ago and didn't fair to well, so we really wanted to play well. It wasn't too hard to get the kids ready for this game."

The Beeters played very consistent.

Chinook put up six points in the first quarter, and added 14 more in the second. A 16 point third quarter helped the Beeters put the game away fairly early, and a six point fourth was just the icing on the cake.

Tyler Molyneaux had another huge game while leading the Beeters to another win and an 8-1 overall record. Molyneaux rushed for 203 yards and found the end zone a total of five times on Saturday. Molyneaux's scores came from four, 27, eight and four yards out.

Ben Stroh also had another solid outing for the Beeters. Stroh rushed the ball 11 times for 59 yards, and found pay dirt from 32 yards away.

Overall it was great game for the Beeters. Both the offense and defense played at a very high level, and besides a few turnovers, coach Molyneaux was happy with the post season win.

Chinook will travel to Western C champion Charlo for the Class C quarterfinals on Saturday.

Wibaux 42, Chester/J-I 28

In more Class C 8-Man play, the Chester/J-I Hawks weren't as fortunate as the Beeters on Saturday.

On the road in Wibaux, the No. 4 C/J-I Hawks suffered a 42-28 loss to the No. 1 Eastern C Longhorns. And with the loss comes the end of the Hawk's season, finishing the year 4-5.

What ended up as a lopsided win began as a close matchup.

To start the game, the Hawks and Longhorns found themselves all knotted up at 14-14 to end the first quarter. But as the Longhorns went onto post 28 unanswered points, the Hawks 14 points in the fourth were too little too later.

Brandon Graff had a big game for the Hawks, but his efforts weren't enough.

Graff scored all four of the Hawks touchdowns. Graff's scores came from a nine-yard run, one-yard run, 12-yard run and from a 15-yard run.

Denton 43, North Star 0

The Class C Six-Man Knights also suffered a season ending loss on Saturday.

On the road, the Knights ran into a very tough No. 1 Denton Trojans team out of the Central Conference. And the Trojans proved their No. 1 seed with a dominating 43-0 shutout win over the Knights.

The Knights couldn't find a way to stop the Trojans' running game.

Cole Jelinek rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns against the Knights. And on the ground, Jelinek averaged 14.6 yards per carry.

But it just wasn't a good day all around for the Knights, as they only put up 94 total yards of offense, compared to the Trojans' 278. The Knights also coughed up two fumbles.
