Hansen trounces Trethewey

The chief deputy Hill County attorney won a seat in the next Legislature in a landslide.

Republican Kris Hansen defeated Havre firefighter and convenience store manager Jack Trethewey 1,918-1,062, with 64.3 percent of the vote, during a dismal night for local Democrats.

Hansen won the seat being vacated by Speaker of the House Rep. Bob Bergren, D-Havre, who could not run for the seat due to term limits.

Bergren lost his bid for the seat in Senate District 17 to Republican Rowlie Hutton.

In her victory speech at the Republican headquarters on 1st Street in Havre late Tuesday night, Hansen called on her constituents to help her represent them.

"Please let me know what you want," she said. "I don't want to do just what I want. Let's make this true representation."

Trethewey said this morning that the results were a disappointment, but it seems to reflect a major Republican advancement in the region.

"I'm obviously disappointed, and not only for myself," he said. "Quite a few people put in a lot of work in my behalf.

"It looks like a big trend I got caught up in," Trethewey added.

In the race in House District 33, which stretches from Havre through western Hill County, Trethewey failed to carry a single precinct.

Hansen's margin of victory in the 10 Hill County precincts ranged from 57.07 percent, 210-158, in Precinct 2 in the courthouse-libary section of Havre, to an astounding 81.12 percent, 202-46, in the Kremlin-Gildford precinct, No. 20.
