ommunity gets ready for Thanksgiving meal
Havre's long tradition of hosting a community Thanksgiving dinner will continue this year.
If tradition holds up, 600 to 800 people will gather at St. Jude Thaddeus Parish Center on Thanksgiving Day to share a community turkey dinner.
And Kitty Williams, who is again organizing the dinner, says she hopes people of all walks of life will show up for a good time.
The doors will open at 11 a.m. and food will be served until 3 p.m., she said.
"We have an anonymous donor who wants to make sure everyone has a nice Thanksgiving dinner," she said.
Another Havre tradition, she said, is community residents coming forth to help out.
She's encouraging people to once again step forward to volunteer.
The real work starts on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, she said, when people are needed to begin the early preparations.
"We try to get as much of the food ready the day before," she said.
Tables and chairs are set up, and the preparations are made for delivery of food to people who can't make it to the dinner.
Annually, about 200 people have meals delivered, she said.
On Thursday at about 8 a.m., the first set of volunteers are needed to help with preparations for the meals, she said.
Drivers arrive at about 8 a.m. and by 8:45 a.m., they start making deliveries to people around town.
People who want meals delivered should call the North Central Senior Citizens Center, she said. She asked that people give specific directions to their homes and have someone at home to accept the meals.
"We don't leave food unless there is someone there," she said.
Then, at 11 a.m., people start showing up for the meal at the Parish Center.
A new round of volunteers is needed.
In the kitchen, people help out by making sure the food is cooked and prepared, she said. Some people help serve patrons, she said. Others volunteer on the serving line.
And, as the crowds start to thin out, volunteers help clean up, while others take down the tables and chairs, she said.
