Havre Art Association's big weekend approaches

This weekend, Van Orsdel Methodist Church is hosting the event of the year for local artists and art enthusiasts, the Havre Art Association 40th Annual Show and Sale.

The two-day event, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, will feature the work of 25 local artists, and a guest artist from Helena, Loren Kovich.

Event Organizer Kris Shaw said that she and the board really liked Kovich's landscapes and asked him to be this year's guest.

Kovich will be displaying his art, speaking about techniques during both days and teaching a watercolor workshop on Monday and Tuesday.

Other artists will be working in various media, from sculpture to oils, from woodcarving to batik. There will be some pieces for sale, and others as a part of a silent auction that will feature different items each day.

There is also a people's choice award, where the artists in the show all create something to go with a pre-chosen theme. Then visitors vote on their favorite. First place gets $50; second gets $25. This year's theme is "mugshot."

Aside from seeing and possibly picking up some local art, Shaw said the show is also an exciting social event.

"It's a good time to get together with the artists," Shaw said. "And the town gets excited and comes out for it, so it's great to get together with people."
