School board meeting: policies, evaluations and conference

The Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees will hold its November meeting 6:30 p.m. today in the Havre Middle School Assembly room.

Early in the meeting, the board will vote on approving district expenditures and the hiring of some substitute teachers.

Then a final reading and vote on the policy changes looked at last month will the take place.

These changes include extending drug bans to people with medical marijuana licenses, creating a breastfeeding in the workplace policy and modifying and rearranging the district-owned vehicle policy.

The time has come for Superintendent Andy Carlson's first evaluation. At tonight's meeting, board members will receive an evaluation packet, consisting of 21 multiple-choice questions and three essay questions.

The examinations of Carlson's performance must be completed by Nov. 18, to be compiled and summarized before the Dec. 14 board meeting.

Carlson has expressed interest in receiving input from many more people, including teachers, students and parents. For now, though, it's just the board.

Aside from evaluation distribution, the superintedent's report will also include a review of the Montana Conference of Education Leadership, which some trustees attended three weeks ago.

This review may include the creation of the Class A Caucus, the organization of Montana's Class A schools that was formed during the conference. From Trustee Curtis Smeby's description of the meeting, the Class A Caucus formed a board whose members will be studying issues common to all Class A Montana schools.
