Community to honor veterans Thursday

While government offices, banks and some businesses will be closed in honor of Thursday's holiday, events are planned throughout the day and afterward to honor military veterans.

Bill Bilger, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 497 in Havre, said a ceremony will begin at the veterans memorial wall at 1st Street and 3rd Avenue at 11 a.m.

Following the ceremony, coffee and cookies will be served at the Elks Club.

The ceremony is coordinated by the Hill County United Veterans Council, comprising VFW Post 497 and its auxiliary; American Legion Post 11 and its auxiliary; and the Disabled American Veterans.

First Lutheran Church of Havre also is stepping in to honor veterans and others who serve the country. Special church services at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday will honor military service men and women and veterans, as well as law enforcement and emergency services personnel.

People serving in, or veterans of, all branches of the U.S. military and National Guard, as well as police officers, sheriffs and sheriff's deputuies, firefighters and emergency medical technicians and members of the U.S. Border Patrol are invited to the services, as is the general public.
