Park vandalism case discussed

The Hill County Park Board heard a description during its meeting Monday night of several hundreds of dollars worth of vandalism in the park last month.

Beaver Creek Park Superintendent Chad Edgar said someone in mid-November drove through regions of the park, shooting out the flashing lights on "Cattle on the Park" signs and knocking down several of those and other signs.

The damage was estimated at $850, Edgar said.

He said a suspect is identified, and if the case is successfully prosecuted, the county could receive restitution for the damage.

He added that, as in any criminal activity in the park, people coming forward with information leading to a conviction are eligible for a $500 reward.

In other parts of his report, Edgar said the county has applied for mitigation funds from the state through the presidential emergency declaration made last summer for the county.

Those funds are available to help prevent future damage from similar disasters. Edgar said the county has applied for funds to help build up the streambank at Elks Campground to prevent future flooding, as well as funds to help build up streambanks to lessen future problems.

The board Monday also approved holding the annual ice fishing derby at Beaver Creek Lake south of Havre. The board approved the requested dates of Jan. 29-30.
