People who want to enjoy some great chili while helping a Havre Middle School student enjoy the dream of a lifetime are urged to come to Holiday Village Mall on Saturday.
Haley Nicholson, the 14-year-old daughter of Zeb and Shannon Nicholson, is one of several area students who have been selected to take part in the People to People program.
Under the program, created by President Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s to encourage international understanding, teenagers can travel to foreign countries to learn about foreign cultures.
Haley will go to France Switzerland, Italy and Austria this summer
Three other Havre students and one from Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation have been selected for the program.
These students must each raise $7,000 to fund their trip.
Haley said she has received a $1,000 scholarship and several businesses have given her money, but she still has a lot of money to raise.
She and the other students will hold raffles and auctions and do gift-wrapping, along with several other fund-raising projects. Most of the fundraisers will be done by the students individually, but they may team up for joint fundraisers, she said.
Once they were nominated for the program, students were interviewed, she said. They were asked about their communities and their schools.
Going on the trip will be a challenge as well as being a learning experience, she said.
"We will be representing American as well as our families," she said.
The students are required to perform a community service project before going to Europe, she said.
And once in Europe, the students will jointly perform a community service project.
Some of the time, they will be living with European families, learning first hand what life is like.
On Saturday, she said, people will be treated to some great food.
"We have five kinds of chili," she said, and the meal comes complete with cornbread.
